DuPage County libraries are vital partners to Literacy DuPage
Prior to COVID-19, libraries provided spaces for our learners and tutors to meet weekly, as well as room for us to find new volunteers during Meet & Greet sessions and areas for tutor training sessions. In addition, some libraries provided space for peer-tutor mentor meetings or for free community conversation groups. Furthermore, libraries offer ample materials and assistance for our learners and tutors.
All of this and more make our relationships with DuPage County libraries an indispensable component of our program, and it’s vital we support their valuable work. We would not be able to do the work we do without them!

Library reopenings
Since late June, when Illinois entered Phase 4 of the Illinois State Reopening Plan, libraries started reopening. Not all reopenings look the same, though. Below are some of the DuPage County libraries’ current opening policies and other happenings.

Addison Public Library
There is a two-hour time limit for all visitors. Study rooms are currently unavailable, but tables and chairs are available for tutors and students to use.
Library employee Mari Carmen Cifuentes started an English reading circle via Zoom, which meets 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday with a group of 4-7 people. Library staff also leads a Spanish-conversation class, Practiquemos Español, on Tuesday evenings. They’ll add an English-conversation class on Thursday evenings in October.

Downers Grove Public Library
The Downers Grove Public Library is open for walkthrough visitors and encourages patrons to grab-and-go. Patrons are invited to visit the library for up to one hour per day. Additional services will eventually be available. However, popular services such as the children’s play area or notary services are currently unavailable.
Open and curbside hours:
Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Available services:
- Browsing for materials (books, movies, music, etc.)
- Reference and readers advisory
- Library card registration
- Computer use, reservations required
- Wireless printing, copiers, and scanners
Curbside pickup has been one of the library’s most successful transitions in service during the pandemic, regularly serving over 200 cars a day. The library continues to offer curbside pickup services and now allows for print orders to be picked up through its curbside pickup service.
Programs will continue to be held virtually, with nearly all in-person programs and meetings postponed until further notice. Listening sessions on diversity, equity, and inclusion are planned for September. All are welcome to participate.

Fountaindale Public Library District

Glenside Public Library District
The library is open for full services at this time, except with less seating options and no in-person programming. Literacy DuPage tutors may call or visit its website glensidepld.org to reserve study rooms. People can visit the website to view and participate in virtual programming offerings.

Indian Prairie Public Library
Library hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; closed Friday; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Two study rooms are available with a limit of two people in the room, allowing in-person tutoring if the tutor and learner are comfortable doing so. Lisle Library District
Lisle Library District, a longtime Literacy DuPage partner, offers a large collection of literacy/English-language development books, CDs, DVDs, and pre-loaded Launchpad Kindles available to check out while visiting the library.
Although the literacy room is not in use at this time for one-to-one tutoring, the library has a literacy computer, including English-improvement software, available in the adult services area for one hour at a time by one person. Individuals must bring earbuds or purchase a pair for $1 at the circulation desk.

Poplar Creek Public Library District
The Poplar Creek Public Library in Streamwood and the Sonya Crawshaw Branch in Hanover Park is open for business! Sign up for their eNewsletters for updated information about library programs and events. View September's eNewsletter here.

Roselle Public Library District
The Roselle Public Library reopened its doors on July 13 for limited services, such as grab and go, curbside pickup, notarizations, and computer appointments. All printing fees are temporarily waived due to the pandemic.
The library’s modified hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The first hour each day is by appointment only, and visitors should keep visits to one hour or less to better ensure social distancing and safety.
Tutors can contact the Adult & Teen Services Department, 630-529-1641 x211 or [email protected], if they are interested in meeting a student at the library or have any questions. Staff are still available by phone, email, and chat via the website: www.rosellepld.org. Up-to-date changes to service levels are posted on the website’s main page.

Warrenville Public Library District
The library is open for “grab and go” on a limited basis. Visitors can access collections or use a computer for 45 minutes. Copier and fax machines are also available. They also offer curbside pickup. Study rooms and meeting rooms are not available. Visits are limited to one hour per day. All tables and chairs have been removed from public spaces. All events and programs are virtual for the foreseeable future.

West Chicago Public Library District
The library remains closed until further notice. Curbside service is available Monday through Saturday, and requests for materials from other libraries can now be made again for participating libraries. Materials that are checked out now have active due dates that are no longer being extended. If you have materials that are due, please return them to the outside book drop.
A virtual ESL conversation group is now offered by the three Literacy DuPage tutors who ran the in-person group before COVID. This group meets every Thursday at 10 a.m. For more information, visit

Wood Dale Public Library
The Wood Dale Public Library is currently open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The library is closed Sundays.
Currently, the library is undergoing construction, and the study rooms do not allow enough space for social distancing. For more information, visit

Woodridge Public Library
The library building is open with normal hours. Curbside pickup ends one hour before closing.
In-person meetings are NOT yet being scheduled in the library. The library is co-hosting SSIP virtual citizenship classes in the fall, and Literacy DuPage is currently working with the Woodridge Public Library to host a weekly virtual conversation group.
