Dear Black Male…
Zoom Webinar
September 10, 2020
4 pm to 6 pm
Presented by Welcome2Reality
This two-hour workshop will focus on the depiction of Black males in today’s society, the issues they go through and the issues they face, including the cultural mistrust which influences perceptions and the quality of their relationships. Recognizing that Black males vary in their individual needs, the workshop will identify supports that might be most effective. Participants will address how efforts to adequately provide for Black males can be linked to the fight for larger social justice goals for themselves and their communities. This is an opportunity to examine your personal experiences and explore your knowledge base around historic and current systemic oppression, implicit bias, and the impact it has on Black males. Expand your skills to facilitate healthy identities, positive self- esteem, and healing.

Cutting-edge Ethics and
Risk-management Issues
in Social Work
LIVE Webinar
October 9, 2020 1:00pm-4:00pm Central
3.0 CEUs in Ethics
|
|
Online and distance social work has quickly come of age. It is important to adopt best practices to work online in an ethical and effective way. For some social workers, remote delivery of services reaches clients who live long distances from their office or whose special needs limit their ability to travel. For other social workers, online and distance social work has become a sudden necessity because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. It is essential for social workers to keep pace with rapidly evolving ethical and legal standards governing online and distance practice.
This webinar will provide an up-to-the-minute overview of prevailing standards in social work. Dr. Frederic Reamer will discuss recent technology-related updates to the NASW Code of Ethics; new technology standards adopted jointly by the NASW, ASWB, CSWE, and Clinical Social Work Association; and relevant statutes and regulations. He will discuss potential benefits and risks of online and distance social work services, and present practical strategies to protect clients and prevent licensing board complaints and litigation.

Course Description
The medical model (approach) to extreme states; so-called “psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder” and other psychiatric labels, has for much too long dominated the mental health landscape. Now we have alternative views and ways to heal. This course is for all mental health professionals including social workers, counselors and peer support specialists. This course is for anyone interested in finding meanings and understanding of distressing experiences and is relevant for folks with lived experience of the mental health system, to their families, relatives and interested others. In each of 6 sessions we will view and discuss a video and talk about a revolutionary report recently out for the general public (you will get a PDF). We will examine your questions and discuss how these alternatives are coming to CT.
Attendees are approved for:

Upcoming October Courses
Becoming a Leader
October 8 and 9, 2020
9:30am – 12:30pm
Supervision has a pivotal function in any organization. Supervisors are responsible for nurturing the most valuable asset of any agency — its staff — while also ensuring the effective and appropriate provision of services to clients. Making the transition from individual contributor to the supervisor of others is a critical stage of professional development, and this training will prepare novice supervisors and managers for their new responsibilities.
The first half of the training will be an exploration of the role of the supervisor and what it means to be a leader of others. Self-awareness, becoming aware of our values, biases, and natural leadership style, will be discussed. The second half of this training will focus on the importance of emotional intelligence for supervisors and will outline a trauma-informed approach to supervision. This day-long training will provide new and experienced supervisors with an understanding of the essential elements of supportive supervision, and the tools they need to develop a competent and confident team that feels supported and valued by the organization.
Course approved for 5.5 continuing education hours.
Mental Health First Aid Training
Saturday, October 10, 2020
9:00am—1:00pm
Mental Health First Aid is a SAMHSA nationally recognized program designed to give people key skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. This virtual course will teach participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness or substance use disorders. Mental Health First Aid takes the fear and hesitation out of starting conversations about mental health and substance use problems by improving understanding and providing an action plan that teaches people to safely and responsibly identify and address a potential mental illness or Substance Use Disorder.
Course approved for 4 continuing education hours.
The Essentials of Motivational Interviewing
October 22, 23, 29, & 30 2020
1:00pm – 4:00pm
This four-part training series focuses on developing the foundational skills of the Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach. Motivation is a crucial factor in people changing severe and intractable human problems such as alcohol and drug dependence, persistent criminal lifestyle choices, intimate partner violence, and disruptive behavior disorders in youth. MI is the most scientifically supported approach for motivating people with difficult-to-change problems. Practitioners will become familiar with the basic theory of MI, practice core communication skills, and learn to recognize, elicit, and reinforce key client verbalizations likely to lead to an effective plan for changing self-defeating behaviors. Through a series of structured learning activities that include role-plays, “real”-plays, video demonstrations, and small group exercises, practitioners will develop and improve core skills so that they can immediately apply MI with their clients.
Participants must attend all four sessions to complete the course.
Course pending 12 continuing education hours.
