Building on the report of Trustees & Council’s working group in early 2020, the bishop announced on June 10, 2020 the creation of the West Louisville Now special appeal. The appeal will fund crucial repairs needed at two predominantly African-American West Louisville congregations—St. George’s and Our Merciful Saviour—so that they can continue their vital presence and services in West Louisville. As a follow up to the Workshop, members the Peace and Justice Department are offering four small group opportunities to further explore presiding Bishop Curry's Way of Love. Each small group series will focus on a different theme or way to go farther down the path of The Way of Love. These groups will meet by ZOOM. Our plan is for the participants and the facilitators of each group to decide a given day and time to meet.

We are excited to share that the Episcopal Church Home has developed a bold vision to reimagine the campus for its current and future residents. ECH will do this by creating more intimate, person-centered healthcare households that meet consumer preferences and will be supported with dynamic programming and therapies. We will also expand the number of independent living patio homes along with additional amenities not seen at ECH in the past. This fundraising idea was based on this simple facet of human behavior: most people toss the coins they received in change ; the ones they find in the their washing machines, sofa and chair cushions, vacuum bags; cars, trucks, boats , you name into some sort of a container. Time passes and those coins pile up and up and up. The folks at St. Mark’s decided to put all those coins to good use.

For three days in late July, six masked members delivered 132 quart- size mason jars to parishioners. The loose Change Challenge (“LCC”) began. The goal was to collect $1,500 for United Crescent Hill Ministries (“UCHM” to match the same amount the St. Mark’s outreach committee had sent to UCHM. Anything over the $1,500 was earmarked for the West Louisville NOW fund.)

The LCC ended, the jars were collected and their contents counted. The total of coins, folding money and checks was $3,009. Of that, $1,500 went to UCHM and $1,509 to The West Louisville Now fund. Additionally, St. Mark’s ECW donated $500 for UCHM, and two parishioners donated $250 each to UCHM for a total of $2,500 for UCHM. Click here to see a video of how UCHM helps those in need.

The enthusiastic feeling among the St. Mark’s parishioners was palpable. In a time when they could not worship in-person, they found a way to stay connected in giving to help the “least of these.” That is a special kind of worship, so Gospel based.

The Food Distribution Ministry of Calvary Episcopal Church is straining to keep up with the ever increasing number of hungry families and individuals as a result of COVID. As reported before, individuals and several churches have donated literally tons of food to sustain this vital ministry. To date, the Calvary Food Distribution ministry has given out 1,408 masks and 2,739 bags of food for a total of 4,244 people fed.

For 24-hours, our community comes together with gifts big and small to give back to the nonprofits which are helping change the world around us.
