NACMS NEWSLETTER
September 2020
On September 3, 2000, Blessed Chaminade was beatified in Rome by Pope St. John Paul II. In honor of this anniversary, we have put together a Beatification Virtual Time Capsule for you to explore. We also have a timely article written by Brother Timothy Phillips, SM and Anthony Garacia exploring "Chaminade and Adversity: A Conversation." We have gathered a sampling of Brother Lawrence Cada's writings to celebrate his life and honor his legacy. While you are on our webpage remember to register for the NACMS Online Reading Group or the Marianist History Course by September 10.
To celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Blessed William Joseph Chaminade's beatification, NACMS has unearthed a virtual time capsule containing treasures related to this glorious event, which occurred at St. Peter's Square on September 3, 2000. Explore the time capsule's contents here. May its treasures (homilies, reflections, and retrospectives) foster your missionary zeal and your love for the Founder of the Marianist Family.
NACMS staff member, Marianist scholar, dear friend and brother: Brother Larry Cada passed away on August 27th, 2020.
It is difficult to think of Marianist scholarship without thinking of Brother Larry Cada. His contribution to the study of Father Chaminade, the Society of Mary, and the Marianist Family are too numerous to name. It is not an exaggeration to say that the North American Center for Marianist Studies would not be what it is today without the many years of love and work by Brother Larry. In honor of his tremendous contributions to Marianist scholarship, we have compiled here just a few of his writings that we currently have on our website.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord! Thank you, Brother Larry, for all the wisdom, learning, and good humor you gifted us!
by Timothy Phillips, SM and Anthony Garascia
Brother Timothy Phillips, SM, a Marianist scholar and formator, and Anthony Garascia, a professional counselor, discuss challenges involved in Blessed Chaminade’s long life. How was it that major setbacks—the French Revolution and organizational hurdles in re-Christianizing France—did not cripple the Founder with anxiety and fear? How was it that Chaminade pushed through obstacles into greater holiness. (A letter Chaminade wrote to Marie Thérèrse de Lamourous serves as a backdrop to this conversation.) To read click here.
A reminder to register by September 10 for our Online Marianist History Course. This course is an introduction to the history of the Marianist Family spanning pre-Revolutionary France through the death of Blessed Chaminade. The material is adapted from the Marianist History Course that is offered to novices in formation with the Marianist Brothers and Sisters. The content of the course is the same; we have simply adapted it for an online format. This course is divided into three separate three-month parts. Students will have monthly virtual classes via Zoom with Sr. Gabriel Bibeau, FMI as your instructor. Students are also required to complete reading assignments and to post on an online class message board. Click here to go to our webpage for more course and registration information.
(Registration for Part One closes on September 10).
As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the beatification of Blessed Chaminade we felt Chaminade's Message Today, written by Eduardo Benlloch, SM, would be an ideal book to discuss for our September Online Reading Group. Registraion is open from now until September 10. Participation is free but you will need to purchase this book as soon as possible if you don't own it already.
Register here by September 10.

As we mourn the death of our dear Brother Larry Cada, we also mourn the death of Father Norbert Burns who passed away on August 28, 2020. We were privileged to feature Father Norb on our podcast series "Sharing Our Marianist Stories" back in 2018.
He begins the interview by saying "Relationship is the key word of my life." Those who knew Father Burns knew this was certainly true.
Listen to the interview here.
May he rest in peace.
Remembering Brother Lawrence Cada, SM
by George Lisjak, NACMS Director
Brother Larry Cada will forever stand as a giant in the field of Marianist Studies. His deep and broad knowledge, attention to detail, determination, and true passion for the work have greatly enriched the world's understanding of the Marianist charism and will continue to do so for future generations of the Marianist Family. We at NACMS will miss his stories, his humor, and his questions aimed at discovering not only the “what” but also the “why” of matters large and small. We continue to be inspired by the example of his life, his work, and his love for all things Marianist.
