Hello Grassland Enthusiasts!
I know I say this every year, but it's hard to believe Summer 2020 is nearly over. I know people are ready for this whole year to be over but the end of summer is always bittersweet.
We have an exciting announcement for the 8th Native Prairie Restoration/Reclamation Workshop, please see below! We're excited about this new take on one of our favourite events!
PCAP is gearing up for a busy fall and winter, we'll be developing a multi-species habitat guide, planning multi-species workshops and prepping for the Native Prairie Restoration/Reclamation Workshop in February. We are also working on converting our education programs, Adopt a Rancher and Taking Action for Prairie, to allow for virtual delivery. If anyone is interested in this new format, you can contact our Education Coordinator, Julie-Anne (pcap.education@gmail.com).
We've had a bit of a hiccup for the Native Prairie Speaker Series in August and September. The pandemic has caused some delays or conflicts for our potential speakers. We're still hoping to confirm a date for our September speaker in the coming weeks! Make sure to check our Native Prairie Speaker Series webpage for upcoming announcements! If you're looking for educational presentations, there is over 150 presentations on our YouTube Channel.
And finally, we would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support : Camp Wolf Willow, EcoFriendly Sask, K+S Potash, Pembina Pipelines, Ranchers Stewardship Alliance Inc, Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association, SaskEnergy, SaskTel, SaskWater, Wildlife Habitat Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada, as well as the continuous support of all the PCAP Partners.
I hope you enjoy the last bit of summer! Stay safe and healthy!

Looking For Plains Rough Fescue Seed Samples
This year appears to be a good seed production year for Plains Rough Fescue (Festuca altaica hallii / Festuca halli) in several parts of Saskatchewan. This provides an opportunity to collect seed for this now listed S3 rare species.
I'm looking for seed samples from across Saskatchewan, Manitoba and eastern Alberta. The goal of my project is to compile different seed lots from across its range to create a genetically diverse seed production plots. Seeds will be started as plugs and then will be transplanted out into production plots. Seed lots will also be kept (goal is to only seed out half of each lot) for future reference.
If you are interested in helping out on this citizen science project, please let me know. Seed collections can be from a couple hundred seeds to larger lots. As part of the collections, the date, location (either GPS location or legal land location), vegetation community type, soil type and any other information would be extremely helpful.

PCAP Partner Spotlight...
Saskatchewan Forage Council
Submitted by Shannon McArton, Executive Director
The Saskatchewan Forage Council (SFC) was formed as a co-operative in 1988 to develop and enhance sectors of the province's forage industry, including production, harvesting, utilization and marketing. The Council distributes current and relevant information on forage-related topics and encourages the use of forages in production systems. Communicating and working with government on industry production issues and marketing policies, SFC assists in the prioritization of research in the forage sector, through it's research committee, Board of Directors and partners, by identifying research gaps. In collaboration with research, government and industry partners, the SFC facilitates applied research projects, hosts extension events and demonstrations and catalogues and shares information and production tools with industry and producers.
Some of our projects and partnerships include ADOPT and Strategic Field Program projects funded by the Ministry of Agriculture. The Forage Variety Demo project is just one of these endeavors, and includes industry funding, along with SFP support. Working with the Canadian Forage and Grassland Association, we're contributing to a multi-year carbon sequestration project.
In June of this year, we launched the U-Pick Forage Selection Tool, designed to provide users with information for forage selection, seeding rates and weed management. This tool, revamp of an earlier tool developed by SFC, was met with great interest across Western Canada. The project was supported by 13 different organization across four provinces, with funding from the Beef Cattle Research Council, Alberta Beef, Forage and Grazing Centre and the Government of British Columbia and Government of Canada through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership. We're very proud of this one; check it out on the Saskatchewan Forage Council and BCRC websites! Our work in communications and extension includes a number of events and activities, often in collaboration with industry partners, that include the Saskatchewan Pasture Tour, Forages in the Field Reclamation Workshop and the annual Saskatchewan Forage Advisory meeting. In November of 2019, we worked with PCAP, Saskatchewan Stock Growers and the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association to host public screenings of Guardians of the Grasslands in Regina and Saskatoon; both of them were very successful. Since March, some of our planned activities have had to be rescheduled or delivered virtually, and we look forward to resuming our regular calendar of face-to-face events as soon as possible. As part of our outreach efforts, we continue to provide access to a wide range of publications and tools, available on the office@forages.ca website. We're working hard to ramp up our communications strategy, with an increased focus on social media. In January we announced a new conference, the Soil Health & Grazing Summit, scheduled for February 25th and 26th 2021 in Saskatoon. We'll host this event in partnership with the Saskatchewan Soil Conservation Association, with a plan to hold it every other year. While current restrictions on public gatherings have complicated our planning efforts a bit, we look forward to a successful hybrid event, combining a maximum number of in-person attendees with virtual attendees. Plan to join us! Registration is scheduled to open October 15th. We value our partnership with PCAP and all its associated organizations, and look forward to continued networking and collaborations in future; hopefully, with a quick return to a face-to-face format!
