Message from the Director

To my fellow veterans, families, and veteran advocates:

As we head into September, NDVS is in the midst of updating our Strategic Plan.  The goals and objectives we develop now will chart NDVS' path for the next year and beyond.  I am always energized by this process!  There is so much work to do and to be excited about as we continue the Department's 77-year history of serving Nevada's heroes.

Warden Named Veteran of the Month and Simons Named Veteran Supporter of the Month
We would like to congratulate John Warden for being named Veteran of the Month (VOM) and Wendy Simons as Veteran Supporter of the Month (VSM) of August. 

Sparks Mayor Ron Smith Leaves Behind a Legacy of Being a Champion for Nevada's Veterans
"The Nevada Veterans Service Commission (VSC) expresses its condolences for the loss of Sparks City Mayor Ron Smith," said VSC Chairman William "Bill" Baumann. "Mayor Smith will always be remembered as a gentle and kind man who cared about everyone in the city he loved.

Passing of a Notable Veteran: Ramiro "Ram" Parocua 
The veteran community of Nevada lost a notable veteran on August 4, 2020 in Ramiro "Ram" Parocua of Henderson. Parocua, a Past Department Commander for the Disabled American Veterans was a well-known and active member of the veteran community in southern Nevada.

September 2 - the 75th Anniversary of the end of WW2

Victory over Japan Day or V-J day, references two different days and are often easily confused. It's used for August 15th as that was the day the Japanese government communicated its intention to surrender to the US. However the formal surrender was not signed until September 2nd. 

Caregiving on the Homefront - Resources 
The Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS) hosted a free, virtual conference, Caregiving on the Homefront, for family caregivers of veterans on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2020.  All the resource links are listed on the NDVS website.

During the past month, there have been several days and even weeks during which none of the residents at the Northern and Southern State Veterans Home have tested positive for COVID-19.

Celebrating the 18th Anniversary of the SNSVH
On Saturday, August 22, the Southern Nevada State Veterans Home (SNSVH) in Boulder City celebrated its 18th anniversary with a drive-thru celebration.  This celebration was open to both family members of residents and the local community, they were asked to decorate their vehicles, play music and blow noisemakers.

You Can Still File a Claim and Speak with a Veteran Service Officer
If you want to file a claim, continue pursuing an appeal, or speak with a Veterans Service Officer, NDVS ensures services are still available to veterans and their families.

Harriet Tubman: Union Soldier
In the mid-nineteenth century, Harriet Tubman (c. 1822 -1913), a runaway slave from Maryland, helped fellow enslaved African Americans make their journey to freedom through the Underground Railroad (a collection of escape routes and safe houses).

PVA - Nevada Chapter's Work In Developing Their Organization
Nevada Paralyzed Veterans of America (NV PVA) has been improving the quality of life of veterans with spinal cord injuries and dysfunction for the past 20 years in Nevada. NV PVA is part of a national organization.
