The college season kicked off at the end of August and Over 100 Eclipse Select Soccer Club alumni, both male and female, are rostered across every level of college soccer at Division I, II, III, and NAIA. There are 45 alumni designated as freshmen entering their first year of college. The remaining includes 24 sophomores, 17 juniors, 17 seniors, and six graduate students with an additional year of eligibility due to the altered 2020-21 season. Balancing Act
With the season in full swing and school now underway, balancing practice, play and school can be tough. As always, we want to remind you (as your physical therapists, naturally!) to make room for recovery time for your body. This means making sure you are getting plenty of sleep (turn those devices off) and listening to your body when you start to get tired.
Fatigue can contribute to injury for soccer players and athletes, in general. Balance is a key ability that helps us avoid injury both on and off the field. A recent study found that fatigue had a significant effect on players’ ability to balance, leading to a greater risk of injury. Therefore, soccer players need to work on balance when they can.
Have you ever thought about how many times you are standing on one leg on the field? We might take this for granted, but every time we do this to set a pass, shot, or pivot we’re using our capacity for balance. Think of balance as a combination of strength and body awareness; practice balance means your balance will improve.
Here are a couple of exercises you can do anywhere to work on balance. These are excellent core exercises as well since core strength is crucial to help with balance. As always, we’re here to help, so if you have any questions about these exercises, call your nearby Doctors of Physical Therapy!

Single-Leg Forward Bend
1. Begin by standing on one leg with the knee and hip joints soft, not locked.
2. Move the standing leg hip backward as you bend your whole body forward, moving only at the hip joint.
3. Engage your core to hold your spine straight. Hold your non-weight-bearing leg in the same line as the torso as you bend forward.
4. Keep the front of your pelvis and torso parallel to the ground and bend until you feel the glutes and hamstring of the stance leg activate and stretch.
5. Pause at the stretch point, focusing on finding balance, stability, and leveling the torso and pelvis.
6. During this exercise, you can stretch your arms out to each side, keep arms straight with hands at hips or hold them out in front of you in line with your torso for more of a challenge.
7. Return to the upright stance by contracting the glutes and hamstring of the stance leg to push the pelvis forward and lift the torso upright.
8. Repeat with the other leg.

Single-Leg Bridge
1. Lay on your back with your hands by your sides, your knees bent, and feet flat on the floor. Make sure your feet are under your knees.
2. Tighten your abdominal and buttock muscles.
3. Raise your hips up to create a straight line from your knees to shoulders.
4. Squeeze your core and try to pull your belly button back toward your spine.
5. Slowly raise and extend one leg while keeping your pelvis raised and level.
6. Hold.
7. Return to the starting position with knees bent.
Repeat with the other leg.

Happy September! This is an exciting time of year full of new beginnings; a new school year and a new soccer season. Learners Log On is here to support your student-athletes with his or her educational goals! Sometimes it can be difficult to simultaneously prioritize your academics when you are so committed and passionate about soccer, day in and day out. As a dedicated Eclipse player throughout my childhood, I personally experienced difficulty in finding a balance between the two.
My name is Katie Milne and I am the founder of Learners Log On and a proud Eclipse Alum. From U11-U19, I played the right outside back position on the Eclipse Select 91/92 team under Coach Rory Dames. I was a co-captain alongside two skilled and strong leaders on my team. We trained 2-3 times a week and traveled many, many weekends to play against the best teams in the country. As cliche as it sounds, soccer was life. This likely sounds familiar and relatable to you and your family!
As academics became more demanding in middle school and high school, so did soccer. I was focused on two things: winning a National Championship with my team and earning a scholarship to play in college. My parents and mentors always reminded me that much of earning a soccer scholarship would be dependent on my grades in school. This stuck with me and I knew I had to devote time to my progress and development in the classroom. I am forever grateful for this guidance, which ended up being essential in achieving my goals. My team wrapped up our beloved Eclipse days as 5x State Cup Champions, 3x Regional Champions, 2x National Finalists, and 1x National Champions. Secondly, I earned an athletic scholarship to Clemson University and had the opportunity to compete in the ACC.
Fast forward ten years and I am now taking an entrepreneurial approach to another passion of mine, educating the youth, through my company, Learners Log On. I hold individual and group-based sessions virtually and each session is personalized to fit the academic needs of the learner. I absolutely love working with young student-athletes who share their interests, goals, and adversities with my younger self!
Visit www.learnerslogon.com for more information or email me directly at learnerslogon@gmail.com to see how I can best assist your young learner along his or her academic path. Learners Log On is offering a promotion for 25% off your first 3 sessions, exclusively to the Eclipse Membership, for those who sign up during the month of September. Don't miss out on this exclusive offer!
