Afterschool Supports Underserved Youth and Families
Attending afteschool programs that provide wrap around services, such as Self Enhancement, Inc. (SEI), supports all youth and family needs. As we assemble back together, families may feel added stress with increased in-person interactions. By providing enriching activities, afterschool programs engage youth and get them excited to be in school and in programs. September is Attendance Awareness month, and according to AttendanceWorks, "2 in 10 low-income kids miss too much school." To help close the gap, participate in the Attendance Awareness 2021 Campaign to help build awareness. Check out the Pathways to Engagement: A Toolkit for Covid-19 Recovery Through Attendance!

Word of the Month: Engagement
Engagement refers to elements that allow children and youth to develop their interest and motivation over time in creative ways. It is the condition and behavior when children and youth “get it” about a subject or activity, and show curiosity, persistence, and passion to develop their interest and motivation over time. Engagement can be displayed through a variety of methods (e.g., behavioral, emotional, cognitive, vocational). According to the ABC's of ELO's, "Family engagement in afterschool includes activities for and with family members that are implemented on-site..." as well as... "encouraging a student’s participation and helping students make informed choices." All types of engagement are critically important in order to fully engage and support youth.
