Pastor Andy Writes...
The People of God
God promised Abraham that He would make him a great nation He promised that in him all the nations will be blessed. Abraham’s son, Isaac, passed the birthright and the promise of God to his son, Jacob. God changed Jacob’s name to Israel. Israel means the people of God. Jacob’s descendants became a nation known as Israel, the people of God.
God provided for Israel. When the people of God were facing starvation because of a severe drought, God used Joseph, a son of Jacob, to save His people by bringing them into Egypt. The people of God became slaves in the land of Pharaoh. God did not abandon His people. He calls Moses to deliver Israel from the hands of Pharaoh. Moses led the people through the wilderness. In the wilderness, God renewed His covenant. God gave Moses the commandments. God told the people of God if they kept the commandments, they would have life. But the people of God did not keep the commandments of God.
The first commandment defines the relationship God desires to have with His people. “You shall have no other Gods.” When we read Exodus and Deuteronomy, God tells us He is a jealous God. He wants to provide what is best for His people. He calls His people to be faithful. When Moses comes down from the mountain, he finds that the people of God have made a god out of gold. God’s anger is kindled against His people. God judges His unfaithful people and the people of God face God’s wrath. A generation perishes in the wilderness without entering the land of promise.
God celebrates when His people are faithful. David found favor “in the Lord’s eyes”. David was a sinner who trusted God to forgive. In the Psalms, David knows God “as gracious and merciful slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love”. He celebrates that God is his “refuge and strength and ever-present help in trouble”.
The people of God are unfaithful. Hosea equates the people of God with a prostitute who goes with anyone who will offer her money. Israel is faithless. Because of their infidelity God drives His people into exile, but God never abandons His people. He brings them back from exile and reestablishes the nation Israel, as a place for God’s people to dwell.
We are the people of God. God wants us to be faithful. He is faithful. He is our God. We are His people. Abraham was faithful. David was faithful. We are called to be faithful.
“Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with
him, we will also live with him; if we endure,
we will also reign with him. If we disown him,
he will also disown us; if we are faithless, he
remains faithful, for he cannot disown
2 Timothy 2:11-13
We are God’s people. He will richly and daily provide for all our needs. Instead of turning away from God and worshipping false god’s we should turn to God and live.
We see in the Old Testament that God makes a promise to His people. He expects His people to be faithful. We see throughout the Old Testament, God sending His prophets to call His people to fidelity.
The people of Israel did not live as the people of God. God protects those who remained faithful. Because The people of God were unfaithful God sent His Son. Next month, I will talk about how the people of God are declared to be the children of God.
Confirmation Begins on Wednesday, September 8th at 6 PM.

THE LWML IS BACK!
You might be asking, what is the LWML?
The Lutheran Women's Missionary League is the official women's auxiliary of The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.
What does that mean at COS?
LWML acts as a way for women of the church to commune with each, study the Bible together and encourage philanthropic endeavors. (And occasionally there's snacks too!)
How do I get involved?
Attend a meeting! The LWML meets in the church basement at 7 PM. They meet on the second Monday of every month. This month the meeting is September, 13th.
