COMING SOON TO BOSTON SQUARE

Signage for 1445 for website.png

The Boston Square Together project will soon activate its first community space!

Formerly Good Shepherd Auto, the building at 1445 Kalamazoo Ave. (at the corner of Oakdale St.) has been empty for more than a decade.

Now it has found a new purpose and will soon open as Kzoo Station: A Community Kitchen and Eatery! For years, neighbors have asked for increased opportunity to build or launch more black-, brown-, and women-owned businesses. Simultaneously residents voiced the need for more local food options that reflect the neighborhood.

Named together with residents and community stakeholders, Kzoo Station will be run by Spring GR and offer neighbors access, resources, and learning opportunities within a commercial kitchen to test or grow their food businesses. Future plans are being created for a retail space that will allow customers to buy the hyper-local food cooked up in the kitchen.

Construction is set to begin in October 2021 and be completed in the Spring of 2022. For more information or questions, email connect@amplifygr.org.

NEIGHBOR SPOTLIGHT: Burl McLiechey

Burl McLiechey 2021.jpg

If you've ever driven down Oakdale St. you've probably seen Burl McLiechey on his front porch enjoying his neighborhood. A resident for the past 60 years, (yep 6-0) he and his wife, Cathy, are deeply rooted in the past and invested in the future of the area.

While Burl continues to look ahead, this spotlight is to amplify and recognize the contributions and heritage he brings to the community. Burl's spirit is rooted in resilience, advocacy, commitment, persistence, and strength. Characteristics he shares with his great-great-great-grandmother, Sojourner Truth.

If you can't remember history class, don't worry. A historical recount of her life as an American abolitionist and women's rights advocate will be the subject of a documentary called, "Truth" set to release in 2022. Look for Burl's interview in the documentary as well!

If you haven't already, make it a point to meet Burl and learn more about his passion for the advancement of everyday people. He is an incredibly unique leader that continues to trailblaze new paths into the future - much like his third-great grandmother. Watch his story on WOOD TV 8.

Thank you, Burl. It is an honor to experience your continued commitment. You help push the community forward!
