Welcome to a new school year!
A Note from the PTA President

Dear HSMSE Families,

Welcome! The 2021-2022 school year is upon us, and we are very excited for what the year holds.

Our first PTA meeting was held on September 23, and we had a record attendance! Thanks to all the 150 people who attended the meeting in-person and on Zoom. I hope that we can maintain this high-level of parent participation throughout the entire school year.

We understand that it can be a challenge for a lot of parents to attend our in-person meetings, thus our upcoming PTA meetings will move to Zoom. The only other hybrid meeting that we'll have will be on February 15, 2022, our first meeting for the spring semester.

I would also encourage all of you to try to find the time and opportunity to volunteer and be involved at HSMSE and the PTA. It's a great way to find out more about your kids' school experience, and it's fun!

Lastly, HSMSE is celebrating its 20th anniversary this school year, and we are already gearing up for the festivities. If you would like to be part of the 20th Anniversary Committee and sign up for PTA activities and events, please click here.

A note on fundraising at HSMSE
The school receives a limited amount of funds from the NYC Department of Education (your tax dollars). We depend on parental donations in order to support the clubs, sports teams, scholarships, teacher grants, and events we do every year. We ask that each family donate $750 per student to the PTA. But please donate whatever is comfortable for you, as we are trying to reach 100% participation from our families. The easiest way to donate is online at our secure website.

Regards,
Fern Robles

PTA Fundraising supports clubs, sports, special school-wide events, and prom, field trips, teacher appreciation, materials for the classrooms, college essay and SAT workshops and more. Parent donations are always welcome, and volunteers who'd like to work on fundraising are also welcome. If anyone has a party room or space available in their building that you think would be a great place to hold an event, please let the fundraising chairs know by emailing them at PTAFundraising@hsmse.org.

The PTA Newsletter is published every month. If you'd like to contribute articles and/or photographs, please email HSMSENewsletter@hsmse.org.

HSMSE FAQs
When does the school day begin and end (bell schedule)?
  • HSMSE has a new bell schedule this year: the school day begins at 8:30am and ends at 2:50pm.
Whom do I contact if I have a question about my child’s schedule?
How can my child get a replacement MetroCard or student ID?
  • Your child should see Ms. Ortiz on the first floor for a replacement card.
Whom do I call when my child is ill and unable to go to school?
  • Email the guidance counselor: Ms. Patterson for 9th & 10th Grades, Mr. Klein for 11th & 12th Grades.
  • Students should also email their teachers directly when they will be absent.
Where can I find my child's schedule of classes, teachers and grades?
  • Parents can find this information on PupilPath.
Will there be any possibility of having remote versions of classes?
  • No. Remote classes will ONLY happen if the city determines a need to switch to a remote week of school or if it is an ASYNCHRONOUS SCHOOL DAY.
  • There are zero options to choose a remote class.
If my child is vaccinated, does this change the random COVID testing?
  • No. All students are subject to random COVID testing (as long as their COVID testing consent form is on file) and ALL students will have a daily temperature check and have to complete the daily health screening online form in order to enter the school, daily.
  • We are monitoring the city policies daily and should they change, we will keep students updated. If you have further inquiries about COVID related questions, please contact Mr. Zara at bzara@hsmse.org
Does the school have a nurse on campus?
  • Yes! Nurse Gloria can be found in Room B15.
Who is HSMSE's Parent Coordinator?
  • Laurie Pecorari is the school's Parent Coordinator. She sends out notices about the school and a weekly parent newsletter. She also helps to organize GEM (Girl's Empowerment Movement) lunches, which we hope will return this year!
  • If you are not receiving regular emails from her, please contact her at lpecorari@hsmse.org.
