President’s Message

Dear fellow AFP-GLAC Members and Friends,
I recently came across a quote I thought I would share:

"Integrity is the choice between what’s convenient and what’s right."

This is from the book, Uncommon: Finding Your Path to Significance, by Super Bowl winning coach, Tony Dungy. Among the topics Dungy writes about are character, honesty, integrity, humility, stewardship, and courage. He offers these reflections after years of working with young men to develop careers of significance- through the qualities noted above, as well as, family, faith, and positive influence, over image.

What does all this have to do with our careers in fund development? I believe there are a lot of parallels. All of us face tremendous pressure to succeed, and exceed our performance from the prior year, each and every year. That success is often measured solely by the amount of revenue we bring in, and while that is essential to ensuring our organizations have the resources needed to serve our clients, that focus can come at a high price. We can risk losing sight of the principles of ethical practice that are so important to our character as fundraisers, and so important to the relationships we have with our donors. We need to remember that long after the year is over and our revenue targets have come and gone, our very integrity and level of honesty, appropriate stewardship, courage in the face of pressure, and humility in the support of our missions, will long remain.

I am very proud of our chapter and our profession and hope you are, too. I also hope each of you will join in AFP’s effort to promote an ethical practice that encompasses all that Coach Dungy espouses. It isn’t always easy, but there are resources here and at AFP Global that are designed to help us do just that. Please take advantage of the webinars Global has available; come to our upcoming Virtual Ethics Educational Event on October 5th from 09:00 to 10:30 a.m.; participate in the October 12th Virtual Roundtable; or simply reach out to a fellow member to talk about an issue.

You are critical to the difference your organization makes to those it serves, but equally important is the inherent impact that lies in the kind of practitioner you choose to be. As we prepare for the fourth quarter “push,” please accept my best wishes for a year of success and one of uncommon significance, too.

Best Regards,
Mike Driebe, MSLM, CFRE
Chapter President

A brave new world in philanthropy is emerging and it’s forging a new road for impact. In this session, a fundraiser and funder will engage in a dynamic conversation about how grantmaking can operate through an equity lens to strategically distribute resources and strengthen communities. You’ll learn what role nonprofits can play in the funding process and what steps organizations can take to empower themselves with the tools and relationships needed to navigate the path to success.

These IDEA sessions are sponsored by Bloomerang.

AFP Global Update
You don’t want to miss an exciting and informative webinar brought to us from AFP Global on Thursday, September 23 at 10:30 AM. Two leaders of the Women’s Impact Initiative (WII) will share the impactful activities that have taken place during the past three years that focus on the issues around the role of women in fundraising, including gender inequity, sexual harassment, and implicit bias. Taryn Gold (Associate VP, AFP Global) and Liz LeClair (Volunteer Chair of WII) will showcase the research, programs, and successes of the work to raise the awareness of the issues women in fundraising face. I have had the pleasure of working on the WII with these two professionals during the past two years and their work is amazing. Stay tuned for invitations to register. Hope to see you there!
