September 2022
Ashby Village is a vibrant East Bay nonprofit organization that harnesses the power of a peer-to-peer approach to connect older adults with each other and the resources to age well and to remain active and engaged in the places they call home.
We're committed to building an inclusive organization and culture that advances access to practical services and social and cultural programs for older adults from all backgrounds and economic means to age healthier together with dignity, purpose, and self-determination in the diverse, multi-generational neighborhoods we all cherish.

We are aging better, together.
The International Day of Charity is a global celebration that was established to engage people around the world to help others through volunteer and philanthropic activities.
Please consider offering your time as an Ashby Village volunteer, your financial support, or both! Even an hour or two each month helping our members and small donations help our village continue to thrive and serve more older adults in our communities.

Bay City News Foundation Launches Aging Information Hub Focused on Bay Area Seniors
With the population of seniors in California set to grow by two-thirds in the next two decades, critical issues around housing, health care, transportation and more are weighing on families, communities and policymakers.

To help explore those issues and equip Bay Area seniors with practical information, Bay City News recently launched an Aging Information Hub for the greater Bay Area.

Bay City News Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit news organization backed by charitable contributions from "people who care about local news, a free press, democratic values and an informed citizenry".

Through data-informed stories and interactive data visualizations, the Aging Information Hub includes senior resources by county and reports on topics like affordable housing, an aging workforce, and shifts in electoral power.

The editors are eager to hear from readers about what they would like to see added to the site. Contact publisher Katherine Rowlands with your feedback: [email protected].

Special Volunteer Training: Blindness 101
Learn more about vision changes and blindness, things that may impact the members who you work with. This recording covers blindness etiquette, dispelling some of the blindness myths (including helplessness), and more about LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
This focused training is valuable for any Ashby Village volunteer and essential if you serve our members as a Driver/Driver+, a MedPal, or if you provide tech, decluttering, or home safety assessments.

Important note: LightHouse uses “blind” as a catch-all identity. Not everyone with vision challenges identifies as blind, but anyone who works with someone with vision changes will benefit from this training.
Training Presenters:
Sheri Albers, Community Outreach Coordinator
Allyson Ferrari, Volunteer Manager
LightHouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired is headquartered in San Francisco, with an office in Berkeley, CA. Read more about LightHouse and the resources they offer here.

Ashby Villagers in the Community!
Ashby Village volunteers and members joined together for a Volunteer B’Cause event on Wednesday, August 17th to help our neighbors at the Alameda County Community Food Bank.
Positively impacting nearly 1 in 4 Alameda County residents, the ACCFB distributes enough food to feed 60,000 people each day!

Ashby Villagers spent a couple of hours bagging sweet peppers for distribution and afterward were treated to a private tour of the new walk-in refrigerator that makes their important work possible.

Volunteering is a great way to engage with the community!

Sign up here to volunteer at ACCFB as an individual.
The Ashby Village Volunteer B'Cause program assists fellow local nonprofit organizations with specific projects.

Contact Ashby Village Volunteer Coordinator Jessica Sterling ([email protected]) if you'd like to join us on our next community service outing.

This month, we're here to remind you that you're not alone. Cary Sweeney from the UC Berkeley Retirement Center published an article about this very topic. Read Cary's short and relatable piece (along with helpful resources!) that reminds us to keep trying and have patience.

Because isn't it marvelous when something you try actually works? We know you can do it!
