Celebrate National Literacy Month!

Happy National Literacy Month!

September is National Literacy Month! Celebrate with one or more of these ways to support adult literacy education:

  • Donate to help meet unprecedented recent demand for classes, including from recent Afghan and Ukrainian refugees. Donate here.

  • Volunteer as a tutor. Volunteer tutors make programs possible. Volunteers work one on one with students to help improve their literacy skills. Training is provided. Learn more about volunteering.

  • Shop at Half Price Books and/or FreshFin! Half Price Books will have coin boxes for donations throughout the month, and $1 of all sales of the Mike Onsrud Bowl at FreshFin will go to LitNet.

  • Sign up for classes. The fall semester has started! Contact Literacy Network at 608-244-3911 if you or someone you know is interested in improving English reading, writing, and/or speaking skills; becoming a U.S. citizen; or earning a high school diploma.

A peek inside the classroom: Transitions

Transitions class photo with American Family

Our Transitions program provides personalized support, education, and career advising to help adults work toward their educational and professional goals. Community partnerships are a key part of Transitions, and visits from community partners are highlights of each semester.

In this picture, American Family Insurance staff visited class to present on resume building. One student reflected, “I feel like I’ve learned so much more today than I’ve learned in a long time!”

Literacy Network is proud to partner with the community to help adult learners gain skills they need to achieve their dreams! All students have attended at least one community partner presentation and received valuable resources to help them toward their goals.

Ana helps her daughter learn to read

Ana: I can help to my daughter to learn to read.

Why do students take classes? For ESL student Ana, one motivator is being able to help her daughter learn to read!

Many students are working to improve their English to be able to help their children succeed in school. This includes being able to help their children with homework, talk with their children's teachers, and more. In 2021, 46% of Literacy Network students had children in school.

Congratulations, Ana, on all your great progress toward this goal!

Tutors recognized at United Way Volunteer Awards

Volunteers Lynn and Diane

Congratulations to longtime Literacy Network volunteers Lynn Silverman and Diane Woodridge, who were recognized at the 2022 United Way Community Volunteer Awards!

Diane is a GED/HSED tutor who has worked with some of the students struggling the most with completing their high school equivalency credential. She has helped three of these students successfully complete their GED/HSEDs. These learners were then able to pursue employment and training opportunities not open to them without a GED/HSED.

Lynn is an Essential Literacy tutor who has been working with the same learner for many semesters and has been delighted to see her student make great strides toward her goals. She helps show that learning is exciting, fun, and relevant to the learner’s goals and interests.

Congratulations, Lynn and Diane, for this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for all you do!
