The Men's Club Championship began August 20th and 21st with a stroke qualifier and match play quarterfinals. Nineteen participants took on the championship tees in pursuit of Mountain Glen's most illustrious crown.
The field was jam-packed with talent including 4 former champions, 2 runner-ups, and the reigning senior champion. With a field of players half his age, 80-year-old Frank Costanzo proved age is just a number by advancing through the medal round and into the quarterfinals. Unfortunately Frank’s hopes for the title were derailed in the quarterfinals against reigning champion Kevin Foster.
The Club Championship will come to an end September 2nd & 3rd. The remaining four players are Kevin Foster, James Madison, Hoppy Puckett, and Charlie Sturgill.

By now I'm sure everyone has noticed the new sculpted sign at the entryway to Mountain Glen.
The sculpture, donated anonymously, was created by artist, Jerry Stringham, has been wood sculpting with a chainsaw for more than 15 years (a talent he learned from his father). Jerry has created all kinds of animals, including birds, dogs, cats, rabbits, fox, fish, pigs, and of course, his ever-popular black bears, many of which can be seen in front of homes around Mountain Glen. He also creates custom signs for businesses, such as the one he just finished for Mountain Glen.

Bob and Barb Smallback, both wearing shirts sewn by Barb. | |
|
Many of you know Barb and Bob Smallback from their daily walks around Mountain Glen or from the twilight dinners, cookouts, and potlucks they attend. When I recently complemented Barb on a dress she was wearing, she mentioned she had made it and I was impressed. (And also immediately became a fan girl since I sewed many of my clothes growing up.) It's rare to find someone who makes their own clothes today (much less most of their wardrobe). I also knew I had my latest victim, I mean subject, for "Neighbor News." Little did I know I would be getting two for the price of one.
Barb learned to sew when she was ten years old and it wasn't long before her wardrobe was filled with her own handiwork. "If you look back at my school photos from junior high school on, I'm wearing either a blouse or a dress I made in each one." She made her clothes through junior high, high school, and college. When she began her career she even made her suits and blouses for work. However, as her career got more demanding and she had a son, sewing took a back seat and she really didn't pick it up again until after her son, Scott was grown.
In addition to making her own clothes, Barb makes clothes for Bob and especially enjoys making Hawaiian shirts (for both of them), often ordering the fabric from Hawaii. She also sews upholstery and other items.
But the big surprise was finding out that Bob also knows how to sew, having been taught by his mother when he was young. In the sewing department, he pretty much confines himself now to sewing patches on their backpacks of places they've visited and reattaching the occasional loose button. Like Barb, Bob has the creative bug and showed me several lamps he made, as well as some outdoor furniture. He pointed out examples of several other things he made but by that time my head was swimming from the industriousness of these two!

One of the many appeals of live music is that no two shows are alike. Even if you see the same artist or group perform multiple times, each experience will be unique.
With so many live music performances every week (Grandfather Winery alone has music four nights a week) it is impossible to list them all here. For further information on each venue, click on the title to go to their website for more details.

Zaglada
September 9 - 17 at Historic Banner Elk School
When a journalist goes to interview an aged man for her book on World War II, he fires a gun at her. Promptly arrested, he gets the attention of a Homeland Security agent. It seems the elderly man lied on his initial immigration application when he entered the United States from Poland after World War II and is wanted for international war crimes. Is he who she thinks he is? Did he commit the crimes she is accusing him of? Does the fact he was a prisoner at Buchenwald Concentration Camp and not a German soldier provide any justification for what he may have done? A powerful drama that examines how far we'll go to protect the ones we love.
