September News & Updates
Fall is the perfect time to explore the benefits of the great outdoors!
We all need nature!

Being outdoors has many benefits but enjoying the great outdoors with a physical disability can be challenging. To do the kinds of things that non-disabled people do without even thinking about it requires many more steps, as well as accessibility accommodations and even adaptive equipment. Thanks to accommodations in many parks, spending time outdoors is now something that everyone can do.

Get in for free!

New Jersey has an abundance of state parks ready for you to explore. If you need help filling out the application contact your support coordinator. It provides free entrance to any state park, forest, recreation area, and historic site facilities that charge daily walk-in or parking fees, as well as a $2 per night discount on campsite fees (excluding group campsites). Many areas and facilities are accessible to persons with disabilities. If you require special accommodations, it is recommended that you contact the area office prior to your visit. The disability pass is valid for the term of your disability.

Not only can you access state parks but you can access National and Federal parks with the AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL pass.

NJ TRANSIT’s new Transit to Trails program gives everyone the ability to access over 40 parks in all 21 New Jersey counties via our bus, light rail, rail, or Access Link services.

  • By calling 2-1-1 and asking a representative to assist you in registering.
  • To keep this registry current, registrants are required to update their registration information each year.
Services and Support outside of the Supports Program
There is a Board of Social Services in each county. Many of them have similar services but some have specific county-wide services. Visit your County board of Social Services website to learn more, then contact your Support Coordinator for assistance.

Each county also has a family success center. These are great places to connect with others in your community for family fun nights, crafts and more. They offer services to help build and sustain strong, emotionally healthy families and help coordinate the many county and state services available to assist you. They offer a variety of free events and services for family members of all ages. Their goal is to empower families to successfully meet life’s challenges and thrive with security and stability.

Additionally, each town may have services offered only in that town. For example, take a look at Montclair, NJ in Essex County.
