President's Message

It’s September, it’s finally raining on our parched peninsula, it’s time for cooler days and crisper nights, and it’s also time to return to the College for ALL! Whether it’s a Zoom or in-person class, many of us will fill the computer screen or lobby and classrooms with the sounds of reconnecting with our ALL friends as we renew, refresh, and enrich our minds through a variety of classes and experiences. Some of us have been away too long, and it’s time to get back to sharing our lifelong learning journey. Others are new to ALL and we welcome you – it’s a great organization.

The Board of Directors and our office administrator have been working diligently to make our return a smooth one during this transition. We have had to recreate our curriculum, our space, and set up our office and classrooms. It hasn’t been easy at times. I ask that you have patience when you return. We may have some glitches, and we may not always have the answer to your question right away, but we will do our best.

Please make yourself aware of the College’s COVID-19 policy. There is a link at the end of this newsletter and the major points of the COVID-19 protocols are also on our website which you can access at https://www.capecodall.org/covid-guidelines/. It is imperative that you report to us if you contract Covid or test positive. Please read the guidelines and procedures carefully.

Now that we are getting back together, please consider volunteering for a committee or to be a desk volunteer. We still need a few more backup desk volunteers. And many of our committees, like curriculum, finance, hospitality, and communications, need more members. Our organization is only as strong as our volunteers. Check the catalog for a list of the committees on the back page and consider getting involved. Email us at lifelonglearning@capecod.edu.

We are also looking for some new members for the Board of Directors. An election will be held in the spring to replace the members whose terms are over in 2023. Help keep ALL going strong. Lastly, as many of you know, Ann Corbett, a longtime member of ALL and a talented artist, passed last year. She was responsible for our “art gallery” in the lobby. She would encourage artists, quilters, photographers, etc. to display their art in our lobby. We are looking for someone to volunteer to continue her tradition and find artists to bedeck our walls with their creativity.

See you soon!

ALL President
ALL President Jim Lathrop's Legacy

Jim Lathrop was the ALL president in a time before the COVID-19 pandemic and then again during the COVID-19 pandemic until his untimely death in May 2022. Jim was personable, witty, dedicated and kind. Past president Judy Roettig remembers her mentor and friend.
Jim Lathrop provided the structure and intelligence to move ALL into the future successfully. When the pandemic started, many were concerned that ALL would not survive. Jim’s legacy is that he made sure we not only survived but also improved. This success during Covid does not surprise me. When I was vice president, he included me on all the decisions, and we communicated regularly, sometimes every day to make sure we were on the same page. His business acumen far surpassed mine, but I brought my 30 years of experience in managing not-for-profits to the table. Below are structural changes and future planning he implemented during his presidency.

Jim appointed Kirk Young as ALL Treasurer. Kirk hired an accounting firm to prepare and file ALL taxes. He revised our monthly and YTD reports to the Board and members. Managed our reserves in stable investments. All of which was approved by Jim and the Board.

Jim worked to strengthen our relationship with Cape Cod Community College and the Massachusetts Department of Higher Education. He met regularly with Dr. John Cox and the VP of Finance and Business to discuss and negotiate ALL’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). He authorized ALL’s Scholarship program for 4Cs students which was supported unanimously by the ALL Board.

Jim was in touch with all committee chairs, answering questions and supporting their efforts in successfully fulfilling their roles. He encouraged Board members to become Front Desk Volunteers to support our office administrator and and answer ALL members' questions and concerns.

To me, the most important issue Jim addressed was the decision to use Zoom classes during the pandemic. Members and coordinators received training. Zoom is now preferred by many members including members off Cape.

I had the opportunity to visit Jim several times at his home before his passing. Mostly he wanted to know about ALL, who was doing what and that he wished he could attend meetings. As I left, I let Jim's wife Kate know I’d be back again. Kate called not long after to let me know that he was gone. We all miss him, his intelligence, his sense of humor, support, and his love for ALL.

Hybrid Classes Are Coming this Spring!
If you are taking in-person classes, you will have seen what looks like a large TV screen in room C-115. That is our new DTEN technology. It will enable us to effectively integrate in-person classes with Zoom classes. We will share more information about this in the coming months.

Larry Brown Photography Exhibit

Larry Brown is a longtime ALL Coordinator. He has been a school photographer for 40 years. He has taken thousands of portraits, sports and event photographs and documents people he has come to love. His work is hanging on the gallery walls outside the ALL classrooms.
The work on display was originally scheduled to go up two years ago. Then Covid hit and shut everything down. Well, not everything. ALL continued on Zoom. I got to teach several photography classes virtually – and continued to work on my craft.  As a result, it’s a better exhibit. Now, I work with a Digital Arts group at the Cape Cod Art Center, teach kids there, and continue to teach at ALL.

What’s on display here at ALL offers a range of styles and approaches from straight photography to almost painterly results. It’s all in the range of what’s possible – and I’ll be offering photography classes in the future where you can learn to do all this stuff too.

Thank you for your interest – and thank ALL for offering me the first gallery opportunity after the pandemic shutdown to share my work.
