Cultural Adjustment Tips

As an international student, you may feel homesick, encounter difficulties adjusting to your new environment, or encounter language or communication barriers. It is important to be aware of these challenges and realize that your feelings are normal. Talking to other students who have gone through this transition can be helpful. The SIUE Counseling Services is another resource dedicated to supporting SIUE students in reaching their goals. Visit the Counseling and Health Service Office or call 618-650-2842 to set up a free appointment with a counseling specialist. The Counseling Service office is located in the Student Success Center, Room 0220 and they are open from Monday through Friday between 8:00 am - 4:30 pm. You can also download the Counseling brochure here.

TANDEM

Another way to overcome cultural adjustment challenges is to get involved in activities on campus. You can also join TANDEM - A language exchange program facilitated by the Foreign Languages Training Center (FLTC) which pairs international students with other SIUE students who are studying a foreign language. Follow TANDEM on Facebook or email Susan McDonald at [email protected] for more information about upcoming events.

GAP

GAP – The Global Ambassador Program is another great student organization to join. This buddy program pairs U.S. students with international students and offers a variety of opportunities for participants to interact throughout the semester, both on- and off-campus. You can learn more about GAP on the Get Involved page. Visit our website for more cultural adjustment tips and a list of International Student Associations at SIUE.
