From the Executive Director

Dear Friends,

The notion of “being prepared” is more than something that just applies to the Boy Scouts. It applies to all of us. Would you be prepared if a tornado hit your community? Would you be prepared if your neighborhood flooded? Would you be prepared if a severe snowstorm were to keep you home bound for several days?

This concept takes on special meaning for people with disabilities. As September is National Preparedness Month, I wanted to share some resources that are created for people with disabilities:

  • From Ready.gov: Personal Disaster Preparedness

CILO can be of further assistance as well to anyone looking for help in this area as it relates to Independent Living. Please have a look at the links I have shared and feel free to contact us. For now, please be safe and be prepared!!

As always, I enjoy hearing from you. Please contact me at 513-338-5100 or by email.

Regards,

Rob Festenstein

P.S. I once again have a $10 gift card to Starbucks to the FIFTH person to contact me by email indicating you have read my message.

CILO Hosts Voter Registration for

People with Disabilities

As a partner of Disability Voting Rights Week, CILO is building the power of the disability vote in our community during the week of September 12-16, 2022. Disability Voting Rights Week is a national, nonpartisan initiative to build the power and presence of people with disabilities. Disability Voting Rights Week is coordinated by the American Association of People with Disabilities’ (AAPD) REV UP Voting Campaign.

CILO will host a voter registration drive for people with disabilities who live in OHIO or KENTUCKY on Wednesday, September 14 and Thursday, September 15 at our offices located at 2031 Auburn Avenue, Cincinnati, 45219 from 10am to 3pm. (Enter parking lot off Huntington). Those who register to vote will be entered to win an AAPD Rev Up Basket. Please contact Stephanie Talbot, Disability Rights and Advocacy Specialist by email or phone 513-241-8046 with any questions.

Your vote is your right and your vote is powerful. There are over 38 million people with disabilities who are eligible to vote. However, discrimination, inaccessible voting processes, and exclusion from democracy lead to a turnout gap between voters with and without disabilities. People with disabilities are regularly left out of the political process and ignored in policies that directly impact their lives. In fact, less than 1 in 3 voters with disabilities thinks that leaders in Washington, D.C., care about people with disabilities.

During Disability Voting Rights Week, CILO is rallying for people with disabilities, making sure our consumers are registered and ready to vote, and have access to the ballot. When people with disabilities unite and advocate for civil and disability rights, we have been able to achieve meaningful change. In 2022, millions of people with disabilities will cast their ballots in elections across the country that will impact access to health care, financial security, the ability to live in community, and so much more.

Center for Independent Living Options is grateful to have participated in the 2022 Inclusive Communities Cohort facilitated by the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.  Through our participation we were awarded a $12,000 grant to help us achieve our vision to be a recognized leader of quality and innovative services through Transformational Leadership.

Welcome Myra Saaed!
