What is Cholesterol?

As cholesterol or plaque as it's also known, builds up in the arteries, the arteries begin to narrow, which lessons or blocks the flow of blood.

Blood cholesterol is a waxy, fat like substance made by your liver. Blood cholesterol is essential for good health. Your body needs to it to perform important jobs, such as making hormones and digesting fatty foods.

Your body makes all the blood cholesterol it needs, which is why experts recommend that people eat as little dietary cholesterol as possible while on a healthy eating plan.

Dietary cholesterol is found in animal foods, including meat, seafood, poultry, eggs, and dairy products. You can help prevent high cholesterol by making healthy eating choices.

Strong evidence shows that eating patterns that include less dietary cholesterol are associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, but your overall risk depends on many factors

Preventing High Cholesterol

By living a healthy lifestyle, you can help keep your cholesterol in a healthy range and lower your risk of heart disease and stroke:

  • Make healthy eating choices
  • Maintain a Healthy Weight
  • Get regular Physical Activity
  • Quit Smoking – be on the lookout for upcoming Smoking Cessation Program in October
  • Limit Alcohol

Eating for Your Health

From the BaySport Team

The new school year is a perfect time to start some healthy nutrition habits for you and your family!  Packing a healthy lunch box is a great first step. Check out these three easy rules to help prep fresh meals for everyone in your family.

Switch Up Your Normal Sandwich Routine

Use different spreads to add variety (hummus, pesto, flavored nut creams)

Serve it up different (try using a pita pocket, tortilla, or a bento box)

Vary the fruits and vegetables to keep it colorful (bell peppers, carrots, cucumbers, apples, berries, etc.)

Keep Lunches Cold or Hot

Reusable cool packs help keep food chilled. A fun trick is to freeze juice packs or yogurt cups to act as cool packs, and they will thaw by lunchtime.

A Thermos is a great tool to keep food either cold or hot. Use one to store cold items to keep them chilled or hot food items to keep them toasty until lunchtime.

Make School Lunches Easy and Fun

Prep anything you can on Sunday – Spending an hour cutting veggies, mixing sauces, or portioning items (crackers, nuts, etc.) can save a lot of time on weekday mornings.

Prep the night before – Ensure all items (lunch boxes, water bottles, thermoses) are clean and ready to use. Pre-stock lunches with non-perishable items.

Get your kids involved – If your kids are old enough, let them help you prep their lunches. It may or may not speed things up, but it will get them excited about eating the meal they helped put together!

THE POWER OF EFFECTIVE FAMILY SUPPORT

Our families strongly influence our health behaviors including smoking, exercise, diet, nutrition, and substance abuse. Parents have a strong influence on what kind of health behaviors their children or adolescents will adopt. Family interventions for childhood obesity have been more successful and have shown that when parents get involved in weight reduction programs, it results in greater weight loss for both the child and the parent. According to research, having family members who are supportive of your healthy eating and exercise goals is important for long-term weight-loss success. Support can be: Emotional: A shoulder to lean on when you're feeling discouraged. Practical: Someone to watch the kids while you exercise. So if your partner isn’t registered already, why not invite them to receive their own copy of the monthly newsletter? Share this copy with them and remind them of the topics covered each month including:
