What We've Been Up To

Summer 2022 Rewind

We had an incredible summer of fun, growth, learning, laughing and becoming stronger as a community! Watch a full recap of the 9 weeks that made up summer of 2022!

NC Association of County Commissioners’ YouthVoice Youth Summit!

This summer, Club members Nora and Austin from our Wake Forest and Raleigh Boys Club met with Wake County Commissioners Vickie Adamson and Susan Evans in preparation to attend the NC Association of County Commissioners’ YouthVoice Youth Summit!

During their meeting, Austin and Nora learned about the background of each Commissioner and what led them to their role in public service, as well as some of their priorities for the county. Our members made the observation that everything seemed to tie back to managing the growth of the county – schools, transportation, affordable housing, libraries, green spaces, environmental concerns, etc.

In early August, Austin attended the NC Association of County Commissioners’ YouthVoice Youth Summit in Cabarrus County.

At the event, Austin and other future leaders gained a better understanding of the role of commissioners as the governing body for counties, and the county budgeting process. The experience provided a great opportunity for participants to develop strategies to further their leadership and communication skills.

BGCA Summer Advocacy JAM Session

The Summer Advocacy JAM Session brought elected officials into the Clubs this summer! These visits allowed the Clubs to shine a spotlight on how Clubs offer youth access to jobs, academics, and mental health Supports as essential tools for youth success. This summer, we had 14 visits with 16 elected officials or their staff at our Wake County Clubs.

Gardens at our Clubs

We had an abundance of fresh produce growing at our Clubs this summer in raised bed gardens. With the help of Interfaith Food Shuttle, our Washington Elementary School Club started their first garden. The Poe Center came to our Brentwood Club for monthly garden lessons, and they will be hosting a family dinner for Brentwood families utilizing garden produce this September! The Raleigh Garden Club worked with their Rosey Girls group at the Raleigh Girls Club to produce an amazing harvest. The Zebulon Boys & Girls Club grew a lovely garden with the help of volunteers, staff and members. Finally, our Raleigh Boys Club worked with their Director to gather a fantastic harvest. Boys in the garden club became farm to table chefs, cooking quiche Lorraine using Swiss chard from their garden. Watch the video linked below to see their process!

Workforce Readiness Training Series with Baker Roofing Company

This summer, our teens began a workforce readiness training series with Baker Roofing Company. On their visits to the Baker Roofing Headquarters, members learn about the technical and soft skills needed to pursue a career in roofing and construction.

The series also includes opportunities for members to tour the different departments, meet with experts in their craft, discuss opportunities for job placement and career advancement, and participate in a welding workshop.

We are excited to partner with Baker Roofing for future days of learning as part of our Workforce Readiness programming!
