Caitlyn's Recommendation: Misfit Mansion by Kay Davault
This sweet graphic novel is a story about bravery, finding your place in the world, and overcoming your fears. Iris lives with other horrors in a mansion cared for by Mr. Halloway, who collect horrors at his house and cares for them. Iris knows that Mr. Halloway cares for the horrors in his care, but she's always felt like he was afraid of her, and only her. When Mr. Halloway goes on a trip to rescue another horror, the others are able to get out of the house for the first time and roam the town, which is set for Halloween. But fitting in with kids isn't as easy as Iris thinks, especially with a horror hunter right in her own town. A great book to break into spooky season! For grades 4 and up.
Kristy's Recommendation: Lei and the Fire Goddess by Malia Maunakea
It's the summer after 6th grade and part-Hawaiian Anna is dreading her annual trip to visit her grandma in Hawaii. All she can think about is her changing relationship with her best friend at home in Colorado and not becoming the heir to her family's history, as her grandma hopes. One day, in a fit of rage, Anna picks a sacred flower and inadvertently angers the Fire Goddess Pele, who immediately sends an enormous bird to kidnap her best friend and teach Anna a lesson. To save him, Anna will have to learn everything she can about her heritage. An exciting, funny, action-packed story that reads like a Disney adventure. Perfect for fans of Moana and the Percy Jackson books. Recommended for grades 3-6.
Felicia's Recommendation: We'll Never Tell by Wendy Heard
Four California teens spend their free time breaking into Los Angeles' most famous locations, filming it and getting millions on views on YouTube. Casey, Zoe, Jacob and Eddie, the crew that make up the We'll Never Tell channel, are now seniors in high school and are all going their separate ways. They decide to go out with a bang and break in to the infamous Valentini “murder house,” which has been left abandoned, bloodstained, and untouched since a shocking murder/suicide in 1972. When something goes wrong during their break in and the alarm is tripped, only 3 come out of the house. Those remaining need to figure out what happened and how to keep their names out of it. Recommended for grades 6 and up.
