Case Worker Tools for Success

675 advocates trained since July

Georgia’s 1,535 foster care case managers have a difficult, but critically important job. Case managers coordinate medical and social services and schooling for our 10,500+ children in foster care. They make decisions that have lifelong consequences for the kids in their care.

Since late July, we’ve trained 675 Georgia Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS) personnel to advocate at school for these children and youth. As we do each school year, we equip these case managers - as well as foster parents, teachers, and other caregivers - with advocacy tools and connect them with the appropriate resources to address each child’s unique needs. We are making sure that every child in foster care gets necessary educational supports and an opportunity to stay in school. Learn more about how we help case workers and other advocates support children in foster care here.

Collaborating for Care

Did you know that students are 6x more likely to complete mental health treatment in schools than in a community setting? School-based services provide help where kids need it, when they need it. Providing services at school reduces obstacles like transportation, finding a convenient appointment time, stigma, and cost.

Georgia Appleseed partners closely with school systems, mental health providers, and other nonprofits to bring services to kids at school. As the Georgia Collaborative for School-Based Behavioral Health, we partner with The Carter Center, Voices for Georgia’s Children, and Resilient Georgia to pool resources and share expertise. Together, we help schools build strong school-based behavioral health (SBBH) programs that improve academic success, social skills, and school connections. They boost teacher morale and also raise graduation rates. Our SBBH Collaborative provides technical support and guidance for schools interested in establishing SBBH programs, and publishes important information about Georgia’s SBBH initiatives, like a map of existing programs throughout Georgia and fact sheets about the need for and impact of high-quality programs.

Spotlight on the Zeist Foundation

This summer, Georgia Appleseed received a special grant award from the Zeist Foundation commemorating the philanthropic interests of three generations of the Brumley family. Jean & George Brumley created the Zeist Foundation in 1989 to engage their children in philanthropy. This legacy lives on through their foundation, which embraces holistic approaches to address the needs of underserved children in Health & Human Services, Education and Arts & Culture.

The Zeist Foundation began partnering with Georgia Appleseed in 2008 to bring our vision of safe, nurturing schools to every part of the state. Together, we have kept hundreds of thousands of children in school and tens of thousands out of the juvenile justice system. The latest Foundation gift supports our school-based behavioral health program. Learn more about the Brumley family and their legacy of philanthropy: www.ZeistFoundation.org.
