Biofest is less than 2 weeks away! We look forward to celebrating the 35th Biofest at Campbell's Resort in Chelan, WA. We are excited to gather together with our industry peers, take a field trip, listen to a panel of historical Northwest Biosolids members, and gain knowledge around PFAS, circular economy, regulatory updates, and more! There will be amazing food and beverages and great company. If you haven't signed up, there are a few days left. We hope to see you there!

Are we there yet?
By Dr. Sally Brown, University of Washington
|
I’m writing this more than a month before Biofest but it will likely land in your inbox just before the festivities begin. The theme this year is ‘Back to the Future’ and in a way – this library is a spin off on that theme. Here I’m using that theme to look at how much food we can grow in cities and how that is impacted by how much of the nutrients in cities are recycled. This library also features three papers by yours truly, the work only possible because of the cooperation of a number of programs and funding from King County and NW Biosolids.

Policymaking in the age of natural climate solutions
By Dani Gelardi | Senior Soil Scientist, Washington State Department of Agriculture
|
The urgency of climate change has sparked rigorous public interest in managing farmland to sequester soil carbon. Public, private, and philanthropic entities have created hundreds of soil carbon initiatives, promoting practices labeled as “regenerative,” “climate-smart,” or “natural climate solutions.” Intensive funding and focus have led to enormous opportunities for growers. They have also led to confusion over what is possible or practical to achieve through agricultural management.

Invitation to Submit Research Project Proposals - Deadline Extended to November 1st
|
Northwest Biosolids has a funding opportunity to help expand research into all our member areas. This year, we have committed $90,000 to our research grant program that was launched last year. Northwest Biosolids is providing this funding opportunity to existing members and new members and their researcher partners that have interest in biosolids and related topics. The deadline for proposal submission is extended to November 1, 2023.

Flush! Where does our poo and pee go? Brains On! Science podcast for kids
|
Amy Ohlinger, Northwest Biosolids Executive Director here! Some of you know I am a mom to 2 young curious kids. We often listen to a podcast while we drive called Brains On! I was so excited to send this episode to NWB Researcher, Dr. Sally Brown after my kids and I listened to it. This episode informs listeners about what happens after you flush. As soon as they started talking about biosolids, I was so excited!
Episode Description: Every time you flush, your poo and pee start an epic journey. From the toilet, to the sewers, to a treatment plant, our waste travels quite a distance only to end up cleaner by the end. We'll hear from a "PooTube" star about her experience with "the flush." We'll also hear about ancient sewers, a "fatberg" under London and a toilet that cleans waste on site. Plus, our Moment of Um answers why you can feel your heart beating in your neck of all places.
