Update – Streetsville Centre Plaza Proposed Redevelopment

As you may know, De Zen Group is currently working on proposed redevelopment plans for their property located at 120 & 146 Queen Street South & 169 Crumbie Street, which is also known as Streetsville Centre Plaza. These plans were discussed at two in-person community meetings in Streetsville, which were held on April 6, 2022 (De Zen Group meeting) and June 28, 2022 (Councillor Brad Butt meeting), respectively. Many Streetsville residents attended both meetings and provided fulsome feedback and comments on the proposed redevelopment plans for this property. Thank you for your valued participation in these community meetings.

De Zen Group has not made a formal submission to the Planning Department as of yet; however, a formal submission is expected this fall. De Zen Group is continuing to work with City Staff to address Staff and resident comments on the proposed redevelopment plans.

Long-time Streetsville residents, Anne and Malcolm Byard, also attended the Council meeting on September 13, 2023 to make a deputation to Council regarding the Centre Plaza proposed redevelopment plans. They spoke about a resident petition they had organized and submitted to Council, which contains over 1000 resident signatures and expresses community concerns regarding the proposed redevelopment plans. I would like to thank Anne and Malcolm for their deputation to Council and for their excellent work in promoting, preserving, and protecting the heritage and history of the Village of Streetsville over so many years. You can view their Council deputation and my comments at Council at https://bradbutt.ca/media.

Streetsville Heritage Conservation District Community Meeting



The City is engaging the community to determine whether Streetsville meets the legislated criteria for consideration as a potential Heritage Conservation District (HCD) under Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act. The study will be carried out in two phases. The first phase will determine whether or not the area meets the criteria as an HCD. If initiated, the second phase would include drafting an HCD Plan which provides policies and guidelines to manage change within the proposed HCD boundary.

Mayor's City-Wide Thanksgiving Drive



This season, the Mayor’s City-Wide Thanksgiving food drive, in support of Food Banks Mississauga (formerly The Mississauga Food Bank) is aiming to raise the largest Thanksgiving goal of $1 Million to help the City’s food banks support our neighbours in need.

Year over year, the need for food at our local food banks continues to grow. Food Banks Mississauga is reporting an increase in the number of those accessing the food bank, with 5% of Mississauga residents relying on the food bank. When compared to pre-pandemic levels from 4 years earlier, the food bank has seen a more than an 80% increase in food bank users. As many of our neighbours struggle with the rising costs of fresh and nutritious food, we must work together to ensure that our hungry neighbours have healthy and fresh food on their tables this season and beyond. There are many ways you can help, if you are able:

Thursday, Sept. 28, Test Your Smoke Alarm Day



Thursday, Sept. 28, is Test Your Smoke Alarm Day. Sadly, last year, Ontario lost 133 people to deadly fires, which is the highest number in over 20 years. Many of these fatal fires would have been preventable if there had been a working smoke alarm.

So as the fall season approaches and cooler temperatures start to roll in, you and your family will probably start to spend more time indoors. One easy way to keep you and your family safe is by using smoke alarms. Here is what you need to know:

• Smoke alarms are not optional. They are legally required to be installed on every storey of a residence in Ontario. This also includes any vacation homes, cabins, trailers, RVs and cottages.

• Property owners must test alarms annually, after the battery is replaced and after every change in tenancy. Renters must notify their property owner as soon as they become aware that a smoke alarm is not operating.

• Smoke alarms don't last forever. Replace smoke alarms according to manufacturer's instructions, usually every 10 years.

• There are many types of smoke alarms. Smoke alarms can be hard wired, battery operated or both. If you need to replace a single malfunctioning alarm, make sure the new alarm is compatible with the existing units. For example, you cannot replace a hard-wired smoke alarm with a battery-operated smoke alarm.

• If a smoke alarm starts beeping frequently due to cooking, baking or using the shower, do not remove the battery.

Having a working smoke alarm is the first step in fire prevention. Remember, it is also important to talk with all family members about a home fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year. In the event of a fire, you may have less than 60 seconds to remove yourself and others from danger.

Working smoke alarms save lives and homes, and while Test Your Smoke Alarm Day is officially recognized on Sept. 28, it is never too early to put safety first and take action now. 

Mississauga seeks feedback on outdoor patios



Do you run a restaurant or have you visited a local patio this summer? If so, the City would like your input on making outdoor seasonal patios an ongoing part of the restaurant scene in Mississauga.

In 2020, City Council gave the green light for a temporary seasonal patio program to help support businesses and bring life to our streets during the challenging times of the pandemic. Since then, these spaces have helped bring vibrancy and energy to our city.

With the temporary program set to expire, City staff are working on by-law updates to ensure outdoor seasonal patios continue to be an option for the restaurants that want to offer them.

Staff are seeking input on:

·        Suggestions for improving the patio experience in your community

·        Improvements to the outdoor patio regulations

·        Streamlining the patio application process

·        Insights on the new Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario protocol for extending patio liquor licences

Staff will bring a report to Council with the final zoning by-law recommendations later this year. Once approved, the new by-law will take effect on January 1, 2024

City staff are looking for comments from the restaurant industry, business groups and local residents to help inform the by-law. There are several different ways to learn more and share your feedback.

1.   Survey: Complete our Beyond Indoor Dining online survey from now until October 6.

2.   On-demand information session: Watch our recorded information session starting September 26 and share comments with our team.

3.   Industry information session: Members of the restaurant and business community are welcome to register for our industry information session on October 3, 2023 from 10am – noon.

Give us your thoughts on green building standards



Do you think it’s important that the City works to make sure most new private buildings are energy efficient, don’t create a lot of pollution, and are good for the environment? If so, don’t miss this opportunity to share your thoughts about Mississauga’s Green Development Standards (GDS). You can comment on:

·        Performance and resilience: this includes lower energy costs, improved comfort, power during energy outages, and renewable energy use.

·        Climate impacts: including air quality, greenhouse gases and cool temperature materials.

·        Ecology and natural systems: includes tree health, green roofs, biodiversity, and bird-friendly designs.

Buildings are one of the biggest GHG emitters. If we build them better, they will be better for the planet and save everyone money.

Our Green Development Standards will help our community cut down on harmful emissions and better prepare for climate change impacts. GDS are mandatory and voluntary standards which help ensure new private buildings are good for everyone – nature, people, and our local economy. If you care about our environment, your well-being, and the future of our community, we want to hear from you.

Take part in our GDS survey, tell us your priorities and share your ideas. The survey will be open until October 4, 2023.

2023 Crime Prevention Conference

Established in 2010, the Annual Crime Prevention Conference presented by Safe City Mississauga calls on academics, government officials, educators, law enforcement, social workers, crime prevention practitioners and community members from across Mississauga to present new research, discuss best practices, and solutions to public safety.

The 12^th Annual Crime Prevention Conference will be centered around Online Harms and will showcase presentations on community-centered approaches and evidence-based research on safety and well-being.

PRP recovers multiple high-end vehicles in Auto Theft Investigation



Investigators from Peel Regional Police 21 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau Auto Crime Unit have disrupted and dismantled an auto theft crime ring dubbed Project Vinny. Beginning in September 2022, the near year-long investigation was in response to an influx of vehicle theft across Peel and the GTA. Investigators determined some of the stolen vehicles were being re-vinned, fraudulently re-registered and illegally sold.

Project Vinny resulted in:

·        Six arrests and 42 charges.

·        Total of 22 vehicles at a value of $1,950,000.000 recovered:

·        13 Land Rovers (1 revinned)

·        2 Porsches (both revinned)

·        5 Dodge Rams (3 revinned)

·        1 Honda CRV (revinned)

·        1 Cadillac SRX (revinned)

Various investigative tools were used to identify multiple suspects and recover these stolen vehicles. Investigators were also able to link other similar types of vehicle thefts in Peel and York Region that were believed to be carried out by the same group of accused. 

Project Vinny is one of multiple successful auto theft investigations that PRP have dedicated efforts and resources towards. PRP has arrested and charged 6 individuals through Project Vinny. To learn more about vehicle theft prevention, please visit PeelPolice.ca.

Canada Dental Benefit



The interim Canada Dental Benefit is intended to help lower dental costs for eligible families earning less than $90,000 per year. Parents and guardians may be eligible if they pay for dental care for a child under 12 years old who does not have access to a private dental insurance plan.

Depending on your adjusted family net income, a tax-free payment of $260, $390, or $650 is available for each eligible child. You can apply for a maximum of 2 payments per child.

Applications are open until June 30, 2024 for:

·        dental care received between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024

·        one additional payment if you meet the criteria

New street signals allow for safer crossings



The City of Mississauga is implementing Pedestrian Head Start Signals (also known as Leading Pedestrian Intervals) as well as Bike Head Start Signals (also known as Leading Bike Intervals). As one of the 99 actions outlined in the Vision Zero Action Plan, this update will give pedestrians and cyclists a five-second head start into their crossing before the light turns green for vehicles.

From a road safety perspective, Head Start Signals will help increase the visibility of people crossing through an intersection, reinforce their right of way and encourage drivers to yield. It also provides those with mobility challenges more time to begin their crossing before vehicles enter the intersection.

Signal changes will happen where Accessible Pedestrian Signals (also known as Audible Pedestrian Signals) are already in place. In Mississauga, close to 200 intersections will be updated with Pedestrian Head Start Signals, and more than 20 intersections with existing bike signals will be updated with Bike Head Start Signals.

Moving forward, as new intersections are built and upgraded across the city, Accessible Pedestrian Signals and Head Start Signals will be added.

Using your green bin is easy



Using your green bin is easy to do and good for the environment too. Organic items are collected every week. Check your collection calendar. These items are converted into soil for growing fruits, vegetables, and flowers. 

Weekly collection reduces the stinky bin smell, and it’s better for the environment. Put your fruit and vegetable peels, meat, fish, and bones in your green bin. They don’t go in the garbage. If you put them in your garbage, they:

·        End up in the landfill

·        Release methane gas, which is harmful to everyone

Tips for using your kitchen container and green bin:

·        Remove packaging before putting food in the bin.

·        Scrape leftover meat and fish bones directly into the bin.

·        Peel your fruits and vegetables over a paper towel or newspaper. Wrap the paper towel over the peelings, then put the whole thing in your green bin.

·        Use cardboard, newspaper, shredded paper, paper towels or certified compost bags as liners.

·        Add baking soda to reduce stinky smells.

·        Clean your kitchen container and green bin regularly.

Acceptable organic items

These items are examples of what to put in your green bin:

·        food scraps

·        fruit and vegetable peels

·        bones, meat, and fish

·        coffee grounds and filters

·        paper napkins, paper towels

·        loose shredded paper

·        cotton balls

·        greasy pizza boxes

·        microwave popcorn bags

·        house plants (soil removed)

The Region of Peel offers a free online prenatal program for expecting families. This program is designed for parents who need a more flexible schedule, are on bed rest, or prefer self-directed online learning in the convenience of their home.

See a sidewalk in need of repair? Report it



The City of Mississauga’s sidewalk repair program works to provide you with accessible and even sidewalks so everyone can move around the city safely and easily. City staff monitor, inspect and repair sidewalks throughout the year. They look for things like dips or uneven pavement.

Reporting sidewalks in need of repair If you see a sidewalk in need of maintenance or repair, such as a sidewalk that is severely cracked, collecting standing water or uneven, I encourage you to report it. You can call 311 or submit an online service request.

Once reported, the area is made safe with paint, cones or temporary asphalt ramping until more permanent repairs can be made. Permanent repairs are scheduled based on priority and may take more than a year to occur. Where possible, staff will try to group repairs in the same neighbourhood so that they can be scheduled together. This is more efficient, cost effective and can minimize disruption.
