Fun and Games at SAS

Games courses are all beginning this week, with different options for different levels of experience in all.

Bridge is as popular as ever. New instructor Khalid Al Doori and returning bridge experts Rich Laufer, Sylwia McNamara, and Mike McNamara lead in person and online classes starting this week.

Learn how to play in Beginner Bridge (in person Tuesday mornings: 12083; in person Tuesday evenings: 12084; online Wednesday mornings: 12142). Those with some experience may try your hand at Advanced Beginner Bridge (12011) or Intermediate Bridge (12012). Specific topics will be addressed in Bridge Conventions: Stayman and Transfers (12096), Honing Your Bridge Skills (12145), Bridge: Double Bids (12152), Bridge: Defensive Strategies (12153), and Bridge: Play of Hand (12154). To improve your game by getting tips as you play, register for Bridge: Supervised Play (12013). All the above classes begin this week.

Additional bridge classes start later in the term. Our new Bridge Conventions Tuesday afternoon series continues with the following topics:

  • New Minor Forcing and Fourth Suit Forcing (12097),
  • McWell, DONT, Ogust, and Drury (12098)
  • Key Cards, Roman Key Cards, and Gerber (12099)
  • Defense Agreements and Offense Strategy (12100)

Also in the schedule are more sessions of Honing Your Bridge Skills (12146) and Advanced Beginner Bridge (mornings: 12144 and evenings: 12143).

As the fall weather brings in cooler temperatures, our canasta classes with Jamie Meadow remain hotter than ever. Courses beginning this week are Beginner Canasta (Tuesday evenings: 11991; Thursday afternoons 11985) and Canasta: Supervised Play (11988).

Later in the month, students can explore specific topics in Canasta Strategies: Aces and Sevens (12241) and Canasta Strategies: Special Hands and Advanced Techniques (12242).

After having time to hone your skills in our September and early October courses, grab a partner to take a chance and enjoy a light lunch at our Canasta Tournament (12243) on lucky Friday, October 13, 2023 from 10:00am to 2:30pm. The top two teams will receive exciting prizes and bragging rights.

More sessions of Beginner Canasta (11987 and 11986) and Canasta: Supervised Play (11992, 11989, and 11990) will carry you through the end of the year.

Shuffle the deck and ante up. Learn how to play before hitting the casinos with Poker 101 (12258), a four-session evening course with dealer Steven Levy starting Wednesday, October 4, 2023. Designed for people with little or no poker experience, or who have not had success in the game, students will learn the correct way to play poker and will be given the tools to gain an advanced understanding of the game.

Instructors Anne Wiesel and Katie Goldberg both return this week. Line up your tiles for Let's Play Mah Jongg: Beginner Series (Monday afternoons: 12000; Wednesday mornings 11993) and Let's Play Mah Jongg: Supervised Play (12002). Additional sessions of Let's Play Mah Jongg: Beginner Series (12001) and Let's Play Mah Jongg: Supervised Play (11999 and 12003) will commence once the September classes have concluded.

October and November provide additional opportunities to improve with Mah Jongg Skill-Building Strategies (11994 and 11997). Learn scoring and betting, what to pass and keep during the Charleston, and how to follow the discards to outwit your opponents for the win.
