New Talent Infuses Arts & Crafts Faculty
SAS is pleased to introduce seven new instructors poised to lead students through fun and creative arts & crafts projects.
Antonia Barolini-Alvarez, a painter and draftsperson who holds an MFA from the New York Academy of Art, will be leading weekly evening Drawing classes (Course 12238) starting Wednesday, September 20, 2023. Following an interdisciplinary approach from a wide range of artistic traditions, use varied materials (pencil, charcoal, markers, Chinese brush, pen and ink) to draw from observation and imagination. By popular demand, Barolini-Alvarez will also offer Painting with Pastels (Course 12239), a ten session afternoon course beginning Wednesday, September 27, 2023. Instruction will begin with the basics of drawing, followed by step-by-step introduction to the use of pastels with attention to style, color and composition.

Carmelina Calabrese, an avid beader with experience working in the jewelry industry, will lead morning and evening sessions of Introduction to Beadweaving. Students will create beaded jewelry using a needle and thread, learning some of the basic stitches such as right angle weave, peyote, and flat spiral. The three-session morning class (Course 12093) begins Tuesday, September 12, 2023. The evening class (Course 12094) begins Wednesday, September 13, 2023.

Bonnell Marie (Bonnie) Cotnoir, an illustrator with a degree from New York Botanical Gardens, will introduce Botanical Watercolor Simplified (Course 12212). Learn techniques such as color blending, washes, and dry brush, while painting pictures of flowers. Class meets four Monday mornings starting November 6, 2023.
Artist Jacqueline Davis, former head of a high school design and technology department, will share her knowledge and enthusiasm for painting in morning and evening sessions of Oil Painting for Beginners. The daytime section (Course 12041) starts Thursday, September 28, 2023. The evening class (Course 12042) begins Thursday, October 5, 2023. Students will learn about the paint, color mixing, value, mediums, brushes, aspect ratios, substrates and surface preparation, with a strong focus on color and composition.

An interdisciplinary arts & crafts and health and wellness class, new instructors Katy Romita and Susan Girling debut Drawing Meditations in Nature (Course 12206), a three week drawing and mindfulness course. Each session includes meditation and mindfulness exercises, guided exercises for observing and drawing from nature, tea and conversation, and meaningful time in nature. Class begins Tuesday morning, September 19, 2023.

Amanda Wilson, a professional illustrator with an MAT in art education from Manhattanville College, will lead Introduction to Drawing and Acrylic Painting (Course 12079) for eight weeks beginning Tuesday afternoon, September 26, 2023. She will also teach Express Yourself Through Collage (Course 12080), a six session morning class starting Friday, September 29, 2023. Learning a new technique each week like stenciling, rubbings, or creating your own decorative paper.

We encourage you to try classes from these new faculty members as well as some of the nearly 35 arts & crafts classes from any of our beloved returning instructors. Besides drawing, painting in various media, collage, and beadweaving, the catalog also offers cartooning, knitting, embroidery, macrame, and basket weaving.
