The evening of September 15 begins the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. Most ancient cultures who utilize the lunar calendar celebrate the New Year on the day of the New Moon, and Jews everywhere celebrate the New Year on the New Moon that begins the lunar month of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar, which usually falls in September or October. So I want to wish all my Jewish friends and family a Happy New Year 5784 and the same wishes to everyone else even if not observing or celebrating. We always mark the beginning of the New Year by eating a slice of apple dipped in honey for a sweet year. For those of you who are not Jewish, I hope you can still take part in that simple ritual, since it is a New Moon and a new beginning. Let's hope this next year is infinitely better than the last, and I wish everyone L'Shana Tova, which literally means a good year. Take a slice of apple, dip it in honey, and enjoy the beginning of a sweet new year.

Remember that once Mercury stations direct, which it already has done for all intents and purposes, we still have the five planet retrograde parade, with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto still retrograde until they all go direct (Pluto on October 11, Saturn on November 4, Neptune on December 6, Jupiter on December 31, and Uranus on January 27, 2024). That just means that things will continue to move slowly, which is not a bad thing at all. Take time to review situations, revise projects, and get to know someone before jumping into a new personal or professional relationship.

As many of you know my book Venus: The Evolution of the Goddess and her Planet was published in 1993 and while it has been out of print for a while, it is still available on used book sites. The book, which was published by HarperCollins, was very well-received and went into a second printing, but a book will only stay in print with a major publisher for a certain period of time. I have wanted to revise the book and bring it up to date for a while, and finally have been able to begin that process. I am working hard to finish those revisions within the next six months and publish it again. Of course it might take longer than that and I have already received grants from the New York NCGR and the Urania Trust to help the project along. So watch out for my Kickstarter campaign which I will let you all know about as soon as I get it up and running, and I hope you will support it with a small donation.

This month's lunations occur with the New Moon on September 15, 2023, 1:39 AM GMT, Tropical 21° Virgo 58’. Sidereal 27° Leo 53’ uttaraphalgunī, and the Full Moon on September 29, 2023, 9:57 AM GMT, Tropical 6° Aries 0’. Sidereal 11° Pisces 55’ uttarabhadrapadā. If you have any planets, points, or angles around those degrees (I would take a one degree orb) then whatever is represented by that planet, point or angle, will be prominent and important until the next lunation, meaning that if something in your chart is conjunct this month's New Moon on September 15, 2023, it will be prominent until the next New Moon, which is also a solar eclipse on October 14, 2023, and if something in your chart is conjunct this month's Full Moon on September 29, 2023, it will be prominent until the next Full Moon, which is also a lunar eclipse on October 28, 2023. The New Moon represents beginnings and can help you to institute a change you have been thinking about while the Full Moon is an accomplishment or culmination and gives the push to continue on that path.

If your birthday is between September 14-16, 2023, then the New Moon and a direct Mercury are in your solar return (varṣaphala) or close enough that it will be important for the year ahead until your next birthday, meaning a change is bound to happen, so work on that change. It could be a physical move, job change, relationship change, or simply working on yourself to integrate new patterns and habits into your life. Expect a great deal of transformative experiences that will make you want to change or take a step in a different direction. Take your time but do head in that direction, since otherwise it will happen to you whether you initiate it or not.

If your birthday is between September 28-30, 2023, then the Full Moon is in your solar return (varṣaphala) or close enough that it will be important for the year ahead until your next birthday, meaning that it may be year when things you have been working on will manifest, or feel like they are moving in the right direction, so continue with whatever is fulfilling you. Mercury usually stays in one sign for about two–three weeks. Closer to the retrograde it can be in one sign for about two months. Mercury will be in tropical Virgo from July 29th through October 5th. Mercury will be in sidereal Leo from July 25th through October 1st.

Mercury stations direct on September 15, but remember that the retrograde parade continues with five planets still moving in backward motion. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto will still retrograde until they all go direct (Pluto on October 11, Saturn on November 4, Neptune on December 6, Jupiter on December 31, and Uranus on January 27, 2024). That just means that things will continue to move slowly, which is not a bad thing at all. Take time to review situations, revise projects, and get to know someone before jumping into a new personal or professional relationship. The good news is that Mercury's direct motion is one more planet that will speed up, and can restore better communication, clarity, and more ability for understanding and listening to others.

As I have said before, do not be fooled when a planet goes direct, since it will first take a few days for that energy to start to move forward quickly. Mercury and Venus rebound quicker than Mars through Pluto, but Mercury still takes time to move ahead, since Mercury still stays in its retrograde arc, or shadow, until September 30 as we see above. Because retrograde and direct stations are points of power and intensity, often powerful events occur around the station and interestingly enough the United Auto Workers just went on strike on the station of Mercury direct. Perhaps that will ultimately give them a better contract and they will resolve this by the time Mercury leaves the retrograde arc. At least there is more opportunity for negotiating on a direct Mercury, though as I said, five planets are still lagging, since retrogrades simply slow things up, since retrogrades mean that planetary motion is slower when observing from earth. It also means that the actors and writers' strike can perhaps now find a way to negotiate with Mercury moving direct but only time will tell. I would suspect that things will begin in a new direction and will really take shape after September 30. You can also look at this to measure things in your own life that you would like to be started, resolved, or even ended so that you can move forward.

Many of the snafus that you felt under Mercury Retrograde will start to ease up, however, even though Mercury is direct, it is still within what we call its shadow or retrograde arc, that is the period from when Mercury first crosses the degree where it eventually goes direct (August 4, 2023) until the date when Mercury crosses for the final time the degree where it first stationed retrograde (September 30, 2023), as you can see in the above table. This is important in that if you have a planet, point, or angle in between Tropical 8° Virgo-21° Virgo 51’ or Sidereal 13° Leo 54’-27°Leo 45' you may have felt this particular Mercury retrograde more than usual and you still have until September 31, 2023. Look back over the last two months and see for yourself.

The good news is that we won't have to deal with that pesky Mercury retrograde again until December 13-January 2, 2024. Right now get used to moving ahead with plans that may have been put on hold, or that may have slowed down. You can start making those plans now and once you leave Mercury's retrograde arc, they will begin to manifest. Look at the area in your chart that is framed by the degrees of the retrograde and direct station but even more so look at where tropical Virgo or sidereal Leo is located since Mercury retrograde occurred in only one sign. Mercury is in tropical Virgo between July 28-October 5 and in sidereal Leo from July 24-October 1. Since retrogrades are a period of reflection and revision, and since the planets slow up, think about what you realized or worked on over the last month and get to work on realizing those goals and plans. This area of your life might have become unpredictable, may have slowed down, or taken an unexpected turn but now they will straighten out and move forward. Read if you use Indian sidereal astrology. If you have a planet, point, or angle in your chart between 13° Leo 54’ and 27° Leo 45' where Mercury retrograded, this is what may have slowed down, reviewed, and revised, but ultimately reinvigorated and reinvented slowly after September 15 when it goes direct and at a faster pace after September 30 when it leaves the retrograde arc.

If you want to use Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and the angles you can look below at tropical Western astrology for their keywords.
 
Mercury stays in Leo from July 25th through October 1st. The house that sidereal Leo occupies is the area that may have been slowed down, reviewed, revised, but ultimately reinvigorated and reinvented slowly after September 15 when it goes direct and at a faster pace after September 30 when it leaves the retrograde arc and leaves Leo after October 1st. If you do not know which house sidereal Leo occupies, look at your ascendant, or Moon, or even your Sun (if you do not know your ascendant or Moon), and just count from there. General descriptions for bhavas (houses) are as follows:  
 
1. appearance, destiny, temperament, personality, constitution; 2. Money, family life, food, speech, early childhood; 3. Siblings, Fine arts, courage, desires; 4. Mother, happiness, real estate, vehicles; 5. Children, romance, investments, speculation; 6. Open enemies, work, competition, obstacles, illness; 7. Marriage, partners, contracts, passion; 8. Life and death cycle, research, accidents, other's money, inheritance; 9. Father, teacher (guru), religion, higher learning, opportunity; 10. Career, status, public recognition, reputation; 11. Profits, rewards, gains from work, awards, older siblings; 12. spiritual practice, secret enemies, foreign travel, debt, confinement.

Read if you use tropical Western astrology.  If you have a planet, point, or angle in your chart between 08° Virgo 00’- 21° Virgo 51’ where Mercury retrograded, this is what may have slowed down, reviewed, and revised, but ultimately reinvigorated and reinvented slowly after September 15 when it goes direct and at a faster pace after September 30 when it leaves the retrograde arc.
