From the Mayor

Dear Larchmonters,

I hope everyone had a great summer! I was able to do some traveling, but no matter where I go, every time I come home I am reminded how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful Village.

September is now here! I wish the best of luck to all of Larchmont's students as they begin a new academic year. I'd also like to wish our Jewish residents a L'Shana Tova and a meaningful high holiday season.

As the weather becomes more fall like (hopefully), we have some fantastic and fun events to look forward to. Unfortunately, our Committee Fair was cancelled due to the weather, but we have moved it to Larchmont Day. Larchmont Day will be on Saturday, September 23 from 1-5 in Constitution Park, so be sure to come out and join in the fun, and hopefully learn a little more about how to get involved and the volunteer opportunities we have in the Village.  For the first time this year, we will also be having an 80s after party concert from 7-10pm in Constitution Park following Larchmont Day thanks to Jon Feldman and Ken Dirks!

The following week, on Saturday September 30, the Arts Committee is hosting the Larchmont Arts Festival from 12-5 in Constitution Park. The festival is a free and family-friendly event featuring a variety of art and artists, live music by local musicians and art activities for kids. This is the 20th Anniversary of the Arts Festival, and we are looking forward to the celebration.

Construction on our Flint Park renovation is continuing. We are planning to have ribbon cuttings this fall for the new playground, basketball court and reimagined tennis house. We will of course send out all of the details once we have our plans in place. We are also looking towards Phase 2 and some additional projects in the park. Flint Park Conservancy will be presenting the details at our next Board meeting on September 18 at 7:30pm. As always we appreciate all of the time, effort and energy our tireless partners at the Conservancy have put into this ambitious project!

We also have upcoming renovation projects at Willow Park! Work is slated to take place starting around the last week of September. Additional information will be posted leading up to any park closures.

Our Recreation Committee is also planning some exciting events for this fall. The first up is the pet parade on October 8 and we will be sharing more details closer to the event. We are always looking for more volunteers, so if you are interested in getting involved and helping plan some of these amazing events, please send an email to [email protected].

I hope to see you around the Village and at our upcoming events!

Warm regards,

Mayor Sarah Bauer

Larchmont Police Department: Community Advisory regarding Back-to-School Traffic Safety

With our students returning to school this week, we want to make sure all motorists drive carefully. Here are a few reminders to stay safe as a driver and as a pedestrian:

  • You must STOP for school busses when the stop-arm is extended and the red lights are flashing.
  • Keep an eye out for students crossing at crosswalks.
  • Slow down. Speed limits in school zones are reduced for a reason.
  • Talk with your children about traffic safety and teach them to use marked crosswalks and corners to cross the street. Remember that intersections are usually the safest location for children to cross.
  • Come to a complete stop. Research shows that more than one-third of drivers roll through stop signs in school zones or neighborhoods. Always come to a complete stop, checking carefully for children on sidewalks and in crosswalks before proceeding.
  • Watch for bicycles. Children on bikes are often inexperienced, unsteady and unpredictable. Slow down and allow at least three feet of passing distance between your vehicle and the bicycle. If your child rides a bicycle to school, require that they wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet on every ride. In New York State, all bicyclists under the age of 14 years old are required to wear safety certified bicycle helmets when they are operators or passengers on bicycles.
  • Remind children that sidewalks are for walking. Bicycles should not be ridden on sidewalks.
  • Pay attention to your surroundings by removing your headphones or turn down the volume of your music so you can hear what’s going on around you.
  • Keep watching out for cars while crossing the street. There are a lot of distracted drivers out there so keep looking all around you while in and around crosswalks.

School Traffic Safety is everybody’s responsibility.

Flint Park Renovation Project Updates

We're happy to report that Flint Park renovations are moving along and will continue through the fall for the new playground and ninja warrior course, new basketball courts and new tennis building with café. The demolition phase is completed for these three amenities so you will see these exciting new amenities take shape in the coming months. We expect all three to be completed by the end of 2023 and ask you to exercise caution in the marked construction areas and use the main Locust Avenue entrance whenever possible.

Until construction of the new tennis building is complete, temporary restroom port-o-potties will be available.
