A Message From The Founder

Having lost two friends in as many months, which I share at the end of this article, it is a bit challenging to focus. However, I am reminded of their strength, courage and will to persevere.


I read a quote recently that reminds me of both these individuals, ‘We have the ability to truly live each day until the day we die’. So, how will we choose to live our best today?


My hope is that a part of your day will be invested in exercise. I know, some days, I do feel like a broken record! But what remains true is the fact that the best thing those of us living with Parkinson’s can do for ourselves is to #1 take our meds and #2 take our meds. No, that is not a typo. Exercise is medicine! Virtually every single one of us with PD got up this morning and took a dose of medication(s). However, very few will do the next best thing in taking their dose of exercise yet the science is clear on this. One of my favourite quotes on the topic is from Dr. Jay Alberts:


The Universal Prescription for Parkinson’s Disease: Exercise


Over the past two decades, aerobic exercise has emerged as a mainstream recommendation to aid in treating Parkinson’s disease (PD). (S)everal large human clinical trials have been completed and collectively support the use of aerobic exercise, specifically high-intensity aerobic exercise, in improving PD motor symptoms. Data from these and other studies provide the basis to include aerobic exercise as an integral component in treating PD.

Why then does it remain so difficult for so many of us to take our daily dose of medication (exercise)? I believe that many of the reasons fall under the category of “why I started U-Turn Parkinson’s in the first place”. Some of those reasons are as follows:


  • Stigma - we all hate it when we feel like everyone is watching and judging us. Whether that be because we feel slow, or our tremor, or our stumbling, or our getting confused, etc, etc. We don’t like to feel on display.
  • PD Specific Exercises or The I Can’t Do That Reality - we often feel that most ‘regular’ gyms don’t get us, that some instructors don’t understand the difference between A) I’m doing all I can today because that’s all I can do today vs. B) I can move mountains today because I simply can today vs. C) I don’t really care. We need PD specific instructors and exercise routines.


  • Apathy or the ‘I don’t give a $#!% days’ - whether we like it or not apathy and depression are huge components of Parkinson’s disease. Thus, some days we need a kick in the pants, some days we just need a hug and some days we just need someone who will sit and cry with us. We need a centre that gets that.


  • Courage - we need a place where we can be just who we are on any given day and know that we are going to leave empowered with the courage to take on that day’s battle with PD and win (or not).


One of my primary hopes in starting U-TurnPD was that we might be a little bit like the old sitcom Cheers!

Our hope is to provide a home for those living with Parkinson’s in Manitoba. A place of community, exercise (dance, empower-u, u-tunes, tai chi) and support. 


I am so grateful to all of our Champions who support this vision every month! They champion our day to day needs and keep us on an unshaken foundation. I am also grateful for the many, many donors who support us throughout the year. Thank you for your dedication to the cause of Parkinson’s wellness in Manitoba.


However, all that said, we are not where we need to be. Since Covid, finances have been extremely tight. We need more active participants to become Champions and become monthly donors. We need businesses who will step forward and sponsor a program (dance, empower-u, u-tunes) for the next three years. We need everyone to join us for The Walk to U-Turn Parkinson’s.


We need your help in creating a home for Parkinson’s in Manitoba. Please join us today. But first, if you have PD, make sure you take your meds!

While these things are difficult I nonetheless have the honour of sharing with you the lives of two women who lived as true champions in the face of Parkinson’s.


Sandee Horsman and Jennifer Shearer passed away in the last number of weeks.


While these women have not been able to attend classes for some time due to their illnesses they are both remembered fondly for their friendship and their persevering spirits.

Although they were separated in age by almost thirty years they each lived out the meaning of living your best with Parkinson’s. They came to class as long as they were able and inspired many of us with the smiles they wore and the determination to beat back PD for as long as possible. Our hearts were warmed by their friendship and our spirits will continue to be strengthened by their courage. Our deepest condolences to their families.

Walking Improvement in Parkinson’s disease Research Study


Physical Therapy and Neuroscience researchers from the University of Manitoba are looking for both individuals with Parkinson’s disease and age-matched healthy control to participate in a clinical trial to evaluate the benefits of various treadmill and cognitive exercise programs in Parkinson disease.

Are you Fall Real? The New Website is Live! 


Happy September Everyone,


As we all settle into our schedules as summer comes to a close, you may notice some changes with our website! Through consultation with our Community Advisory Committee, the U-Turn Parkinson’s staff have made some much-needed changes to our website. 


The new website is designed for easier use, more information, and better aesthetics! U-Turn Parkinson's priorities for the website included making the registration process easier, providing additional class information, and connecting our community to resources easily. 


From the homepage, you can now find information about each of our classes and sign up. The registration form is now one page, and with a click of a button you can download and print our new assessment forms and either email answers or bring them to class with you!


We have also made it simple to find out what educational and fundraising events are coming up at U-Turn Parkinson’s.


You can check our events page to learn about fundraisers, educational sessions, and special events and discover how to register! You can also easily find our class calendar to sign up for free-of-charge classes each week.

We have added a 'What is PD?' page with some basic information about Parkinson’s disease and why physical activity/exercise is beneficial, for those newly diagnosed and looking for information and support. 


We have also updated our resources page to include our pre-recorded videos, blog posts, newsletter sign-up, and additional Parkinson’s resources that are available (including videos of our previous workshops)!

A very wise person said ”Life is all about how you handle Plan B”. Plan A of course was always my first choice but after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease I changed my way of thinking about my life. I had to go to Plan B and learn to live with PD and consider new options to help me retain as much function as possible for as long as possible.



When did you join our U-TurnPD community and how did you first hear about us?


Last fall I was offered the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial being conducted at the University of Manitoba. The study is evaluating a newly developed exercise program aimed at improving balance and walking functions in PD patients. I completed the exercise program in May 2023. Both my husband and I believe that the study exercises helped me make noticeable improvements in my gait and balance. I then realized that I needed to involve myself in an exercise program that would help me maintain the gains that study staff helped me achieve. Dr. Szturm, one of the lead investigators for the study, pointed the way to U-Turn Parkinson’s, which I joined in June 2023.


Which classes are you currently attending and what do you think makes them great for those living with PD?


My first choice was Tai Chi. I had been involved in a Tai Chi group in my pre-pandemic life and am aware of the tremendous benefits, mentally and physically it could offer, especially with balance which I needed to focus on.

Right off on my very first visit, I felt very welcomed and was offered assistance by staff and participants alike. I completely felt at ease very quickly.


Our Tai Chi instructor Paola presents the Tai Chi program to suit the needs of PD individuals and I really like her strong focus on improving physical balance. Our individual needs are varied and she is quick to point out variable ways of performing each of our movements.


Ending each session with a relaxation exercise leaves me feeling refreshed and hopeful that I am making headway in maintaining and improving my abilities, mentally and physically. 



What do you like most about being part of the U-TurnPD community?


I have since joined the Monday Empower-U North program I am looking forward to participating in the dancing program starting in the fall. Will I need to get a tutu and the other dilemma is what colour to choose! I truly feel very fortunate that I can participate at the wonderful U-Turn Parkinson's and get to know the people who are part of it.


I can see signs that very positive experiences can happen along my PD journey with the support of U-Turn Parkinson’s! My husband Ron provides strong encouragement and support which keeps me focused on what I need to do to keep me functioning at my optimal level.


Our little dog Charlie also gets involved and makes sure I get out for walks on a regular basis. Above all, let’s not forget to have a bit of fun!

Fall in Love with Dance! Dancing with Parkinson’s Class Coming this Month!

 

We're thrilled to introduce our upcoming Parkinson's Dance Class, in partnership with Dancing With Parkinson's, for the fall season! This specialized class is designed to bring the joy of movement to those living with Parkinson's, promoting physical well-being and fostering a sense of community.

Come Volunteer With Us This Fall!

 

Program volunteers are integral to our classes running smoothly. Volunteers will assist class instructors as needed and have the opportunity to provide one-on-one support to various participants. With experience, volunteers can have the chance to support the instructor by teaching alongside to provide modifications. Volunteers will have the opportunity to provide feedback to the staff about classes. The role of volunteer will also include setting up circuits, wiping down and putting away equipment. Volunteers will also be given opportunities to participate in any special events that are organized throughout the year.

 

We are looking for someone who is:

· Warm and friendly

· Attentive

· Physically able to participate in class

· Able to follow directions and receive corrections

· Ability to laugh and have fun

· Encouraging

National Day of Truth and Reconciliation

 

On September 30, we recognize National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We are reminded of the importance of acknowledging historical truths of residential schools, fostering understanding, and building bridges towards healing for Indigenous communities. The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation was established as a response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 94 Calls to Action. These Calls to Action were made to address both the historical and current impacts of the residential school, and to move forward with reconciliation.

 

At U-Turn Parkinson’s, we strive to align ourselves with the 94 Calls to Action and recognize that there are specific calls that we can continue to work towards. We are always learning how to make our programming inclusive, accessible, and empowering. We work to be able to provide our services for anyone that is affected by Parkinson’s and we put in effort to reach as many people as possible. We will continue to make sure our programs align with the call for healthcare services to provide a holistic approach to Parkinson's management, promoting not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being.

 

As we reflect on the past and work towards reparations, we can learn how to be more inclusive in our own wellness programs for those with Parkinson’s. We are reminded that Parkinson’s can affect anyone, regardless of culture and ethnicity. By fostering a sense of community at U-Turn Parkinson’s, we want our wellness programs to be a space where anyone with Parkinson's can share their stories, experiences, and challenges.


As we commemorate National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, we invite you to wear orange throughout the week of September 25-29 if you would like to.

What specific physical benefits can participants expect to experience through regular Tai Chi practice?

 

Regular Tai chi practices can increase your flexibility, strength, balance, coordination and improve your cardiovascular fitness. The emphasis on correct posture increases our body awareness. Additionally, Tai chi serves as a form of meditation that aids in developing a positive mindset and relaxation.

 

Does Tai Chi contribute to mental wellbeing and relaxation? Why is this important?

 

Tai Chi is like a special exercise that connects your mind and body. You do it while staying calm and focused. You combine meditation, slow movements, and focused breathing. This is important because it helps you notice and deal with negative feelings in a good way. It's like training your mind to see the positive side of things, making you feel happier.

 

Why should participants join Tai chi?

 

For people living with Parkinson's, Tai Chi is a great idea. It's safe, enjoyable, and does a lot of good things for you. It helps you move better, improves your balance, and makes you feel happier. It's like a toolkit for making your life with Parkinson's better and more positive.

 

What is your favourite thing about teaching Tai chi at U-Turn Parkinson’s?

 

Teaching Tai chi is amazing! When I finish a class, I feel so relaxed and full of energy. And the best part? I know that I've made a real difference in the lives of the people I'm helping.

U-Tunes Program Pause - We will see you again Soon!


U-Turn Parkinson’s U-Tunes program will be taking a short pause in September.

Our lovely Music Therapist, Leah will be offering classes on September 5th and 7th and will be leading a class demonstration at our Walk to U-Turn Parkinson’s, but will be taking a break from U-Turn Parkinson’s as she focuses on the start of her Master’s education and health. 


Not to worry though! This amazing program will be back soon! U-Turn Parkinson’s staff will be recruiting another instructor and are aiming to offer the program again in October! Keep an eye out for emails for class return dates! 


In the meantime, we have added two new pre-recorded videos on our website that you can use to practice your vocal exercises and explore mindfulness.
