September 2023

Dear Friends,

Plum flowers might fly in the snow. A sudden frost might swoop in and paint all the roses white. While it’s true enough that spring follows winter and fall follows summer, sometimes the program goes awry. Night and day, a distant wildfire, and a swath of clouds can get tangled up with one another and, boom, the unexpected swoops in. We may look to science or religion to explain it, but all of us, regardless of our mind/heart orientation, will stand there in some astonishment. What just happened?

In the pivotal moment, as the saying goes, everything can turn on a dime. It could result in a thing of beauty or a catastrophe of stunning proportions.

We will feel whatever it is we feel. Meanwhile, as Zen students, we’ll also open our eyes and look at this new world. Where do we stand? What is this? There, in those very questions, we will find our compass and direction. There, we will find our way into the as-yet uncharted territory of our next new fitting function.

Yours in wonder, as always,

Jeong Ji

Eric Nord, JDPSN’s Transmission Ceremony

Saturday, Sept. 16 1pm

We are thrilled to announce that Eric psn’s Transmission ceremony will take place here in Seattle, Saturday, Sept. 16th, at 1pm.

Zen Master Ji Bong, our founding teacher, will be traveling here from Long Beach to officiate at this important and rare occasion. Please join us if you can! The ceremony will be held at the Blue Heron Zen Center, and will be streamed live for those that cannot attend in person.

Blue Heron Zen Poetry

During our recent 9-day retreat, we engaged in a bit of exquisite corpse poetry. We based our works on a poem in one of our Kong-ans:

How many people stay in a worrying dream?

The great one’s original home is everywhere.

One KATZ! sound breaks the whole world.

Plum flowers fly in the snow.

The rules were simple: follow the form of this poem which progresses through points on the Zen Circle. Each line was written by a different person who did not know what was written previously.

We hope you enjoy these selections from our flight of whimsy as much as we enjoyed creating them.

Zen Intersections: Soto and Korean Zen in Conversation

Please join Zen Master Jeong Ji for an enlightening one-and-a-half-hour discussion, “Zen Intersections: Soto and Korean Zen in Conversation,” with Jiryu Rutschman-Byler of the San Francisco Zen Center. Jeong Ji Soen Sa will offer her insights into the Korean Zen tradition of Master Seung Sahn, offering attendees a unique opportunity to deepen their understanding of Zen Buddhism.

The conversation will explore the cultural adaptation of Zen in the West, with a particular focus on the nuances of kong-an training in Korean Zen, and the importance of meditation as the heart of Korean Zen practice.
