September 2023
Dear Friends,
Plum flowers might fly in the snow. A sudden frost might swoop in and paint all the roses white. While it’s true enough that spring follows winter and fall follows summer, sometimes the program goes awry. Night and day, a distant wildfire, and a swath of clouds can get tangled up with one another and, boom, the unexpected swoops in. We may look to science or religion to explain it, but all of us, regardless of our mind/heart orientation, will stand there in some astonishment. What just happened?
In the pivotal moment, as the saying goes, everything can turn on a dime. It could result in a thing of beauty or a catastrophe of stunning proportions.
We will feel whatever it is we feel. Meanwhile, as Zen students, we’ll also open our eyes and look at this new world. Where do we stand? What is this? There, in those very questions, we will find our compass and direction. There, we will find our way into the as-yet uncharted territory of our next new fitting function.
Yours in wonder, as always,
Jeong Ji
