The Prentice Institute mourns the passing of former Quebec MP, Ms. Monique Bégin P.C., O.C., FRSC, a sociologist (Ph.D) and the former Canadian Commissioner on World Health Organization (WHO) Commission on Social Determinants of Health. One of the first women elected to the House of Commons from Quebec, Ms. Bégin was pioneer and a fierce advocate for progressive political policy.

The 2023 Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation Conference Moving In, Moving On & Moving Up: Living Well in Rural Canada was hosted by The Prentice Institute from June 20th to 23rd at the University of Lethbridge. The Conference saw 95 participants from across the country with both in-person and virtual presentations. The Conference content, which included presentations from Prentice Institute employees Rachel McNally, Stacey Haugen, Joshua Passey, Nick Yarmey, Ogochukwu Onyeso, Brie Wilson, Henrietta Adandom, Dr. Adebiyi Boco, and Dr. Lars K. Hallstom, created a great deal of positive engagement.

The Prentice Institute Welcomes Second Associate Director, Dr. Alexander Darku
Dr. Alexander Bilson Darku is a Professor of Economics at the University of Lethbridge and an Associate Director of the Prentice Institute for Global Population and the Economy. Prior to his present position, Dr. Darku taught at McGill University and Concordia University. He teaches and researches in the fields of Economic Development and Public Policy, International Economics, and Monetary Economics. Dr. Darku holds a PhD in Economics from McGill University. He also holds a Masters in Economic and Public Policy Management from McGill University. Dr. Darku also holds a M. Phil and BA (honors) degrees in Economics from the University of Ghana. In addition to several years of teaching experience, Dr. Darku served as a consultant to the World Bank (Washington DC) between 1998 and 2002, and spent two years working with PriceWaterhouseCoopers in Accra, Ghana as an economist. He has also served as a Diasporan Fellow / Visiting Scholar to the Department of Economics, University of Ghana and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) under the Carnegie Diaspora Linkage Program. Professor Darku is currently serving a 3-year term as Project Partner and Mentor for the Volkswagen Foundation Senior Postdoctoral Fellowship Program at the KNUST, Ghana.
Dr. Darku has two main lines of research. The first focuses on the relationship among international trade, economic growth, and income distribution, in developing countries. The second focuses on the relationship between business cycles, poverty, and income inequality. In addition to numerous articles in international peer-reviewed journals and background papers to policy documents at the World Bank, Dr. Darku is the author of three policy-oriented books.

On July 12, 2023, The Prentice Institute hosted Dr. Sanjeev Routray for a discussion on his book The Right to be Counted: The Urban Poor and The Politics of Resettlement in Delhi. The book examines examines how Delhi's urban poor, in an effort to gain visibility from the local state, incrementally stake their claims to a house and citizenship entitlements in the city.
