~ September 2024 ~

Hello CVOA,

Message from the President . . . . .

Greetings CVOA members,

It’s about one month away from Sugarloaf’s Homecoming October 11-13, and it’s time to plan for the change in seasons. Here is a link to the weekend schedule https://www.sugarloaf.com/events-calendar/homecoming CVOA will host a table across from Guest Services from 9am-5pm on Saturday October 12 and 9am-4pm on Sunday October 13. We’re looking for volunteers to staff the table in two-hour shifts to greet members, provide information to prospective members and to accept dues for 2025. This is an activity that’s fun, tests your memory of faces and names of people you have skied with, and recalls those great days from last ski season. If you’re interested in joining us at theTable, let me know by email at tandpjohnston@gmail.com  and we’ll work on a time slot.

Patti and I visited the Mountain a couple of weeks ago to check up on things. I played two rounds of golf. Conditions on the course were lush. Route 27 from Farmington was being repaved for nearly 20 miles. See the DOT website for a 6/17/24 posting https://www.maine.gov/mdot/news/ .

A reminder to CVOA Directors – A CVOA Board meeting is scheduled for Homecoming. It will be held at the Range from 3-5pm Sunday October 13, 2024. Members are invited to attend and join in the discussion.

Garrett Corbin is the new Town Manager of Carrabassett Valley. To learn more about Garrett go to this link:

https://www.carrabassettvalley.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/dailybulldog.com-Meet-Garrett-Corbin-incoming-Carrabassett-Valley-Town-Manager1.pdf

As part of his introduction to the community, he has been meeting with people and organizations that are part of the community. Garrett and I met a couple of weeks ago to talk about CVOA and the contributions it makes to the community, and what we would like from our Town. I explained that our members are a mix of residents of Franklin County and those whose primary residence is beyond the County. Regardless of residence, the quality of outdoor life in the Valley is very important. Our members enjoy the Town resources for outdoor activities, and also contribute to developing and maintaining these opportunities financially and through volunteer work. An item on his list was whether CVOA was interested in supporting the trout stocking at the Outdoor Center as it had in the past. I told him it was likely it would. We also discussed the Range and its contributions to the Valley, and CVOA’s social activities that provide members with opportunities to gather and meet new and old friends, particularly in the winter. Based on our brief meeting, I think our Town continues to be in good hands.

Several members have opted out of the Banff/Lake Louise trip. This allowed two couples from the waiting list to be added to the trip. Currently the trip is filled with 44 members. There is one couple and one single person on the waiting list. If you would like to be added to the waiting list please contact trip leader Mike Parker golfski33@gmail.com

It is not unusual for trip members to cancel over the next several months. There are no guarantees this will happen. However, it could be an opportunity for members to take advantage of this situation.

Range News

Hello Range and CVOA Members,

Just look at that view!

Weekly Five Stand every Saturday from 9am to noon and weekly Trap Shoots every Sunday, 9am-noon. These shoots are non-competitive and designed for all shooting levels. Also, open to the public. $6/round for the clays. Come meet your fellow range members and have some fun! Range Safety Officers are present and can help you navigate the games if it is your first time.

Sunday, September 8th we will have a special Doubles Trap Day! Instead of shooting one clay at a time, two are thrown simultaneously. $12/round. Start time is our usual 9am. We have a few prizes, too. Come try your luck!

New and repaired metal targets set up on Pistol and Rifle Ranges. Thank you to range member and welder extraordinaire, Bill O'Brian for his efforts to keep up the metal targets. Please respect his hard work and shoot responsibly!

As a range member, your guests are welcome. Shooting guests should sign the green Day Use waiver form and pay $10/day. Non shooting guests need not sign in, but it is the responsibility of the member to ensure all posted rules are followed. Any questions, please contact me.

Range Safety Officer Training to be announced. This is an all day course that will be held at our range. Range Safety Officers (RSOs) are an important part of any range insuring the safe use of facility. This certified course will make you a valuable member of any range to which you belong! The date is not yet set, but expect late summer or early fall.

We have had some users shoot up range distance markers, trash cans, and other non-targets. This increases costs at the range and is very disrespectful of our members and those of us working hard to keep the range in good working order. If you see anything and feel uncomfortable talking to the folks misusing the range, please contact me.

Enjoy your Summer and our beautiful Range and be safe!
