WIC 50th Anniversary Celebration!

Join us on Friday, September 13, from 10 am to 3 pm at Skagit Riverwalk Park as the Washington State WIC program celebrates local clinics and participants! This event includes a health fair, guest speakers, and awards recognizing the ways WIC supports our community.

Since the first clinic opened in Kentucky in 1974, WIC has improved the health and wellbeing of millions of pregnant women, infants, children, and families across America.

Diaper Bank Supply Drive

United General District 304 WIC Nutrition Program serves over 200 infants in the Skagit County area. We partner with the United Way of Skagit Couty’s Diaper Bank to provide supplemental diapers to those in need. We are asking community members to consider a donation of diapers. The United Way of Skagit County Diaper Bank lacks a sufficient supply of diapers to keep all Skagit babies clean, dry, and healthy. Your contribution can make a difference. Diapers will be collected as part of National Diaper Need Awareness Week September 16 through 30. The greatest need is for diapers sizes 4, 5, and 6, but sizes newborn through 4T are accepted. Diapers can be dropped off at our WIC office (2031C Hospital Dr., Sedro-Woolley), or visit this Facebook Event for a list of drop-off locations.

Local, Nutritious, and Delicious

Taste Washington Day is October 2! Students across the state, including in the Sedro-Woolley and Concrete school districts, will eat delicious local produce during school meals in a celebration of agriculture and Farm to School programs. Skagit County is one of the largest and most diverse agricultural communities west of the Cascades, with local farmers producing about $350 million worth of crops, livestock, and dairy products. In October, we celebrate the Farm to School programs that connect students back to the sources of their food and school food service teams who are working hard to make sure school lunch is delicious and healthy and supports local agriculture!

Harvest Bounty and Fall Fun at the Farmers Market

September 25 is Kids’ Day at the Sedro-Woolley Farmers Market! Stop by Hammer Heritage Square from 3-7pm for family activities and local products and produce. The last Sedro-Woolley Farmers Market will be Wednesday, October 16.

Recipe of the Month:

Zucchini Fritters

Seems like everyone has zucchini to spare right now! Check out this recipe card in English or Spanish with suggestions for how to prepare zucchini for all the members of your family, from babies trying foods for the first time, to adults with a more developed palate (and teeth!).

What Is a Public Hospital District?

You’re not alone if you’ve wondered what exactly a public hospital district is! Skagit County Public Hospital District #304, the legal name for United General District 304, is one of many community-created purpose districts, like school or fire districts. Public hospital districts are often located in rural communities, and nearly half of all hospitals in Washington are public hospital districts.

We have owned the United General Hospital facility since it was built in 1965. Since 2014, an agreement with PeaceHealth has been in place to provide all medical services. This allows District 304 to develop and offer more than 50 programs promoting health and wellbeing at every stage of life!

A Valuable Community Resource

Without hospital districts many people would be unable to receive healthcare in their own communities. Hospital districts are authorized not only to operate a hospital, but to deliver any service to help people stay healthy—physically, socially, and mentally. Because they're owned and governed by local citizens, hospital districts tailor services to meet unique community needs. This community-based mission defines and distinguishes hospital districts from other healthcare entities.
