Current Events and Politics
This election season's current events and politics classes are hotter than ever. Multiple sections of Let's Talk Current Events with Alfred Hunt and Edward Ginsberg are now underway, as is Ginsberg's thought-provoking Moral Dilemmas course. Fear not, several more classes still have space available and have yet to begin.
This week, Martin Flaherty, the Leitner Family Professor of Law at Fordham Law School, will lead his perennially popular Supreme Court Preview (Course 12730) on Friday, September 20, 2024. Find out what cases are on the docket when the new term begins traditionally on the first Monday of October. Even if you are not able to attend live, consider registering for the class in order to receive the recording of this informative lecture for viewing on demand.
Ginsberg will introduce American Presidency (Course 12795), a five-session examination of the evolution of POTUS elections, including developments leading up to this year's general election. Class meets in the evenings over Zoom beginning Thursday, October 10, 2024.
| |
Beyond domestic politics, David Cheney, former Chief Editor of the International Monetary Fund, will lead a single session class on Demystifying the International Monetary Fund (IMF) (Course 12750). Gain an understanding of this global economic institution, its activities and track record, and its historical connection to the creation of the World Bank and the World Trade Organization. Class meets in the morning of Monday, September 23, 2024.

Community Tip: Cybersecurity Alert
The internet can be a rich source of information, connection, and community. But, as with any public space, safety requires being aware of your surroundings. Online and phone scams are becoming more sophisticated in how they target older adults. These simple tips may help avert a problem:
- Do not click on links in emails from unfamiliar senders.
- Be wary of any strange or unexpected messages, links, and attachments, even if they purport to be from someone you know -- online scammers can easily spoof sender names to mimic those on your contact list.
- Ignore unsolicited phone calls and robocalls -- phone scammers can easily spoof caller ID information.
- Remember that government entities such as the IRS will never call you asking for sensitive information and technology companies such as MicroSoft will not call you out of the blue to offer you technical support or assistance.
- Never respond to nor click on pop-up windows on your phone or computer or any threatening message claiming to have compromising information that may not even exist.
Please forward this tip to others you know who may be susceptible.
