A Message from Your Valdese Recreation Department

Fall is in the air in Valdese! As the weather starts to shift to cooler, dryer mornings and clear, Carolina blue afternoon skies, the Valdese Parks and Recreation Department is excited to transition into our fall programming.

Valdese Tiger Football and Cheerleading is in full swing, and we wish our Tigers the best of luck as they head in the season with strong squads. Thank you to all of our volunteers who have stepped up to make these programs successful. If you want to be involved as a volunteer in Tiger Football, reach out to the Valdese Booster Club! Our fall outdoor soccer program has also started on the Fletcher Field pitches, and we are excited to see this program in action. It is an excellent introduction to the sport, and, as the sport grows across the country, we’re excited to see our area youth taking part.

The department will be starting a 12- week home school physical education class this month, with kids broken in to 7-12 year old and 13-17 year old age groups. They’ll work with staff on different skills and sports throughout the program. There is a lot of buzz around this program, and we hope it will be able to stay on as a regular offering!

For our adults and seniors, fitness classes are ongoing and the fitness center is hopping. We are happy to have received a couple of pieces of weight equipment, and we look forward to taking delivery of some new elliptical trainers and an additional recumbent cycle this month. Aquacise, Silver Sneakers, and TRX classes continue to be well attended weekdays. Additionally, several swimmers from the Valdese Torpedo Masters will be representing the Unifour at the State Senior Games this month, and we hope they’ll finally get the top-5 team finish they’ve been chasing.

We are looking for individuals to help join us as fitness instructors for new adult programs as a part of a grant partnership. We know how much people love our walkable town and parks, so contact us to see how you can assist in helping others enjoy these spaces and start to improving health outcomes for our citizens, too.

The bowling alley will be undergoing some much needed maintenance during the last week of August and first week of September. Lanes will be refinished, and we will have pin decks replaced with new, synthetic decks. In the same area, our bowling alley party room will be receiving new flooring. Stop in and see the finished product the second week of September!

Beginning September, Parks and Recreation will also be implementing some changes on the administrative side of things. Fee changes approved as a part of this past summer’s budget process will go in to effect, and there will be differentiated resident/non-resident pricing in place for rentals and program fees in addition to the membership fees that have been differentiated for several years. For clarity, this is based on whether a household pays town taxes, not if you are a resident of the 28690 ZIP code. To try to make reserving picnic shelters at the parks easier, we are excited to be able to start offering online reservations for our picnic shelters at this time through our valdese.recdesk.com portal! If inquiring about the bowling alley party room or Splash Pad, you will need to make your reservations by calling the office at 828-879-2132. Any of our full-time staff can assist with making a reservation.

We look forward to having you all participate with us here at YOUR Valdese Parks and Recreation Department!
