Take Stock Nassau

Welcome Alexis Holton

New TSICN Executive Director

Take Stock in Children of Nassau County (TSICN) has announced the appointment of Alexis Holton as its new Executive Director, bringing with her more than 15 years of nonprofit leadership experience and a personal connection to the organization’s mission.

She officially joined TSICN on September 15. We asked Alexis a few questions to help us get to know her.

During high school, who influenced your path the most, and what did you learn from them?
In high school, one of the most influential people in my life was my best friend’s mom, Mrs. Waples. She became more than a parent in the background—she was a mentor who celebrated my wins, held me accountable with love, and reminded me I was capable of more than I believed.
From her, I learned the power of extending kindness and believing in young people, even when they face challenges. Her example continues to inspire me and reinforces how vital mentors are in shaping lives.

What is one life lesson that has shaped the way you lead and serve others?
I’ve learned there’s more than one way to reach success. Some take the fast lane, others the scenic route—but both can lead to the same destination. What matters is arriving with integrity, on time, and having grown along the way.
This perspective guides how I lead: I hold people accountable and encourage them to aim high, while respecting that their journey may look different from mine. My role is to support, encourage, and honor each person’s unique path to success.

If you could give one piece of advice to today’s students, what would it be?
Remember that tomorrow is always a new day. Whatever challenges you face now are only one small part of your story. Each day brings new opportunities and the chance to rise stronger.
Life’s hurdles don’t define you—they refine you. Believe in your ability to overcome, and keep moving forward with confidence that brighter days and new possibilities are ahead.

Welcome to our newest

College Readiness Coach

in Hilliard

Kristen Ballowe grew up in Fernandina Beach before moving to Bluffton, South Carolina during middle school. She later attended the University of South Carolina, where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education.
Kristen began her teaching career abroad in South Korea, where she taught in an immersion program supporting students in English language learning. After returning to Florida, she spent four years as a first-grade teacher, building a strong foundation in literacy instruction and early education. In addition to her classroom experience, she tutors students of all ages and coaches parents on how to support their children’s reading development—an area she is deeply passionate about.
As a first-generation college graduate, Kristen understands both the challenges and opportunities that come with pursuing higher education. She is excited to bring that perspective, along with her background in teaching and tutoring, to her role as a College Readiness Coach with Take Stock in Children Nassau. She looks forward to supporting students at Hilliard Middle-Senior High School as they prepare for college and future career opportunities.”

Vicki Arpin - Mentor

What do you consider to be your hometown?

Hamden, CT.

How long have you lived in Nassau County?

6 Years

What made you decide to mentor with Take Stock?

I am a big supporter of education and supporting students so that they can reach their goals. I think programs and opportunities to help raise people up and bring them along are invaluable.

How many students have you mentored?

Emma is my first student.

What have you gained from mentoring Emma?

Emma was very quiet when we first met and it was hard for her to open up in our early conversations. It has been amazing to watch her blossom and grow into her own strength. It is an honor that Emma has graciously allowed me into her life and shared her hopes and plans.  Emma has also shared her joy in art and I am in awe of people who have such a creative skill. She has challenged me to be a better person, see the world through different lenses, and to have patience to let some things evolve. We have talked through some tough topics, especially as she prepares for her senior year. I am so proud of her and can't wait to see her future unfold.

Emma Jones – HMSHS Senior

Why did you want to apply for Take Stock?

I applied to Take Stock because of the opportunities it offers. I hoped to learn from my mentor, while using the Take Stock program to help plan my future.

What have you learned from your relationship with your mentor, Vicki?

I have learned a lot from Vicki. To me the most important item was time management. She has also helped me be more confident in my abilities and strengths.

What is your favorite memory from TSIC?

My favorite memory in Take Stock would be meeting other students in the program. The kickoffs are a great way to reach out to other students and never failed to be pleasant to attend.

What are your plans after you graduate high school and TSIC?

My plan for after graduation is to work while being a part time student. Because I haven’t had the opportunity to work and gain experience in that way I hope to take my prerequisite classes while learning outside experience during my first year.

STUDENT STANDOUTS

Aleah Riggs, a freshman at West Nassau High School, has been accepted into the Nassau County School District Early College program. This program, locally connected to Florida State College of Jacksonville, promotes student achievement by blending high school and college courses while allowing the student to earn both a high school diploma AND an Associate in Arts Degree. This gives students who qualify a head start on college credits and tuition costs! Congratulations Aleah!

Brayden Rosenblatt

Brayden Rosenblatt, YHS sophomore, is on the varsity football team and plays for the band at each game! Way to go, Brayden!

TSIC Nassau is excited to announce its search for the next generation of scholars who exemplify both academic promise and economic need. This opportunity is open to 7th, 8th, 9th or 10th graders from Nassau County and includes public virtual school or private school via the Florida Empowerment Scholarship program.
