The Bridge Receives $130,800 Grant
The Bridge Alzheimer’s & Dementia Resource Center has been awarded $130,800 from the Alzheimer’s Association Center for Dementia Respite Innovation (CDRI) to enhance the quality and availability of dementia-specific respite care for people living with dementia and their caregivers in Shreveport/Bossier.
The Bridge is one of 21 recipients chosen to receive grant funding from nearly 200 applicants across the country. Funds will be used to establish the first dementia-centered respite care facility in NWLA, addressing a significant gap in our area. In addition, no other organization currently offers in-person resources, education, and support services specifically tailored to Alzheimer’s and dementia. This innovative program will provide a secure and stimulating environment for individuals with mild to moderate dementia, fostering engagement through activities and social interactions.
“The Bridge is excited to be included in this elite group of community-based service providers,” said Paulette Freeman, Executive Director. “Caring for someone living with dementia can be overwhelming. This grant will help us provide much needed dementia-specific respite care and services for people living with dementia and their caregivers living in the Shreveport/Bossier area.”
In conjunction with the grant, The Bridge will also receive online training and ongoing technical assistance from the CDRI to ensure respite services are dementia-capable and to support sustainability. The CDRI will also collect data and evaluate the impact of these innovative projects from all grant recipients to inform public policy.
“We congratulate The Bridge Alzheimer’s & Dementia Resource Center on its grant and look forward to working with its team to help enhance respite care services for local dementia caregivers,” said Sam Fazio, Ph.D., senior director, psychosocial research & quality care, Alzheimer’s Association. “We intend to gain insights from each respite program we fund, ultimately developing a catalog of programs, tools and resources that will be easily accessible to interested caregivers and care providers.”
The Alzheimer’s Association created the CDRI earlier this year after receiving a $25 million grant from the Administration for Community Living (ACL), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Over the next five years, the CDRI will provide $25 million in grant funding to local respite providers and organizations to enhance the quality and availability of respite care nationwide. Visit alz.org/cdri to see the full list of this year’s grant recipients.

The Bridge Partners with the Validation Training Institute
Article by Paulette Freeman, Executive Director
It is an honor to announce a partnership between The Bridge Alzheimer’s Dementia Resource Center (The Bridge) and the Validation Training Institute (VTI) while we are also announcing The Bridge’s 4th Annual Education Conference on Alzheimer’s & Dementia. Eric Portnoff, Certified Validation Teacher (CVT) is our distinguished keynote speaker for this year’s education conference. This is the fourth consecutive year that we have brought in a Certified Validation Teacher to our conference.
Through this new and unique partnership between our two organizations, we will share each other’s stories, news, and social media posts to raise awareness about each other’s organizations and the importance of Validation Training. Our goal is to highlight the profound impact of VTI techniques and the essential philosophy of “Connecting Heart to Heart with Older Adults.”
Recently, five staff members of The Bridge completed the Beginning Validation course offered by VTI. The diverse backgrounds, education, and experiences of these individuals have led to insightful discussions, empowering each of us to approach our roles—whether as an intern or executive director—with a new perspective on caring for older adults, especially those with cognitive challenges, using Validation training. Notably, three of our board members engaged in the course, reflecting our commitment to fostering knowledge at all organizational levels.

Accurate blood test for Alzheimer's disease
A research program funded by the NIH in Sweden used a test called PrecivityAD2 to measure the ratio of two types of amyloid beta and the proportion of tau made up of a specific type called p-tau217. The researchers found that the blood test predicted a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease with 88% to 92% accuracy across all participants.
Researcher Oskar Hansson says, "We see this as a major step toward global clinical implementation of an Alzheimer's blood test."

Why Join a Caregiver Support Group?
To be able to say how you feel and have others understand.
To be angry and others will not say you should not feel like that.
To find help on how to handle difficult behavior problems.
To learn that you cannot and should not be the only one responsible for caring for a loved one who has the disease.
To learn where to go for help in caring for a loved one.
To realize it is possible to laugh at some of the impossible, crazy things that happen during a day with a person living with dementia.
To learn to stop trying to teach, or reason, with your loved one and instead accept that the way she/he sees things is very real for her/him.
To discover that it is important to have some time for yourself and not feel guilty about it.
To become aware of how much it helps to know you are not making this dementia journey alone.
To discover that coping is easier with the support and caring understanding of the others present.
