President's Message

Classes start next week and I am so looking forward to that. But why? Like you, I love learning! Sometimes new information – a factoid or a connection – brings clarity and understanding. Other times I experience an awareness of some previously unknown aspect of our world that brings delight, or even awe.

I also like teaching, because it answers an internal call for fairness. If I learn from others, I should give back. But I think most importantly, I look forward to seeing old friends, and making new ones.

We promote our Academy for Lifelong Learning to the newly retired, or the recently relocated, and, of course, to those that have lived here for many years, as a simple and effective way to meet others. Looking at our class offerings, it’s like a church, a gym, a bar, a library, a movie house and a concert hall all rolled into one. I think of my friends now and ask where did I meet these people? For most, the answer is simple – through ALL!

When you come to your first class, be it in person or on zoom, bring your smile and an open heart. I know you will learn something useful or at least worth remembering, but don’t be surprised if you renew an old friendship or start a new one. We are all in this world together, doing our best to enjoy our time here while helping others to do the same.

You aren’t registered for classes? It’s not too late. Go to our website at this link, search the open classes, and send in a registration. And speaking of open classes, after the first week of classes, members can request enrollment in any open course by emailing us at lifelonglearning@capecod.edu.

If you haven’t yet heard from your coordinator, also send an email to us at lifelonglearning@capecod.edu.

I am all too familiar with the many ways that an email can fail to go out, or get trapped in a spam box, but certainly a few days before your first class you should know where you are going or how to connect by zoom, and what to expect. Or just call us at 774-330-4400 and our wonderful office manager Cynthia Jayne will assist you if there is any confusion about classes.

I want to leave you with one last thought. Our next election will be over before this semester ends. Wars continue to escalate, our population grows, and climate change worsens. All this means there is more possibility for us to be at odds, but it also means there is more reason than ever to use ALL as a means to share our experiences and world views so as to bridge those differences and come to a more nuanced, refined, and shared understanding.

In other words, be both open minded and mindful. See you all in class!

Submissions For Reflections 2025 Are Being Accepted

Every year the Academy for Lifelong Learning publishes a compilation of writings and art of its members in an anthology entitled Reflections.

Each of us is accomplished. We have distinguished ourselves in the world of business, academia, arts and science, the military, and so many other fields over a lifetime. As you read this, know you too have something to share that peers and the community would benefit in reading and viewing.

Within you is a story, poem, worth writing. Maybe there is a photograph or piece of art you would like to share. Whether you have a creative aptitude, i.e. writing, watercolor, etc. or you have a predilection for the political, philosophical, community, etc., your voice is important. We each have something to say, and Reflections is your place to do just that

Take a chance on yourself. You have something to share, and we are here to see that happen. Click below for information about submissions to Reflections 2025.

Two Artists Display Work In ALL Gallery

Don't miss the new ALL Art Gallery exhibit.

A new exhibit in the ALL Gallery on walls outside classrooms 106 and 115 feature the work of two artists.

Leslie Dealy Art

Leslie Dealy is an ALL Coordinator who has offered classes in mindfulness and related topics. Her work features seascapes, landscapes and figure drawing.

Leslie has always had a passion for art, taking art lessons since a young child. This includes classes at the Art Student's League in New York City, and a minor in Fine Arts at Temple University, Philadelphia.

Leslie notes that she "strives to capture light, color and movement” in her paintings. While on CapeCod, she has studied with Julie Blanchard, Robert Messrup, Betsy Payne Cook and Susan Overstreet.

Christine Radant Art

Christine Radant was the mother of Cynthia Jayne, ALL's Office Administrator.

Christine Radant was a multifaceted creative professional whose career spanned the worlds of art, literature, and rock and roll. Her artistic journey began in art school, where she cultivated her passion for painting. Radant's artwork is renowned for its rich, vibrant color interactions and captivating textures, showcasing her unique vision and technical skill.

In 1991, Radant's career took an exciting turn when she joined the Rolling Stones as a travel advance staff member for their European Tour. This experience provided her with unique insights into the world of international rock music at its highest level. This incredible experience allowed Chris to travel the globe, significantly enriching her perspectives as both an artist and a writer.

Building on her diverse experiences, Radant published her novel "Home for the Holidays" in 1994. The book's success led to its adaptation into a motion picture, released by Jodie Foster in 1996, further demonstrating Radant's storytelling abilities across different media.

Throughout her career, Radant had seamlessly moved between visual arts, literature, and the music industry. From the vivid strokes of her paintings to the compelling narratives in her writing, and her behind-the-scenes work with one of rock's most iconic bands, Christine Radant left an indelible mark on the arts.

Christine passed away on New Year’s Day 2024.

This amazing woman is also my mother!
