“Stop the world, I want to get off!” I’m not quite sure how I remember that old song, but its refrain has been ringing in my ears lately.
I think we can all agree that these are difficult times. Looking abroad, we see the ongoing brutality of war. Here at home, we peer into the vast chasm that divides us politically and culturally. And everywhere we turn, we witness the declining health of our planet.
With all this uncertainty, who could blame us for dreaming up ways to escape it all? But when we withdraw from the parts of life we don’t want to face, we turn away from the fullness of what it means to be human.
As we walk the path of Zen, we learn that we can be fully present for every moment of our precious life. And by saying, “Yes!” to riding the waves of uncertainty, we can uncover the richness and joy that has been here all along.
