2024 WI SAF Annual Conference


The Wisconsin Forestry Center (WFC) is happy to serve on the planning committee of the 2024 Wisconsin Society of American Foresters Conference, a joint Wisconsin and Iowa SAF meeting.


This year’s theme is "Ecological Forestry" and will feature speakers from the U.S. Forest Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and others presenting the background, guiding principles, benefits, current practices and the future of ecological forestry in the United States. In addition to a nationwide scope, the conference will focus on forestry in the Northern Great Lakes Region. Topics include a review of natural disturbances, ecological silviculture systems, mature and old growth characteristics, and case studies of on-going projects. The second day includes a field tour to representative ecological forestry sites.


WHEN: Oct. 16 with an optional field trip on Oct. 17.

WHERE: Lac du Flambeau, Wis.

COST: Varies from $0-$180

LODGING: There is a block of rooms reserved for the event at Lake of the Torches Resort until Oct. 8. Please reserve your room online or by calling (800) 258-6724 and telling them you are attending the Wisconsin Society of American Foresters meeting.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: SAF CFEs will be pre-approved.

Foresters, land managers, and other natural resources professionals from Wisconsin and adjacent states are expected to attend.

FORESTER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Incorporating Elements of Old Growth Forests in Timber Sales


Join a team of researchers and practitioners as we explore the Argonne Experimental Forest and discuss incorporating elements of old growth forest into forest management. In this workshop, we will cover silvicultural treatments designed to obtain old growth habitats and enhance vertical and horizontal structure, as well as regeneration considerations. We will discuss the importance and application of these practices at a landscape level.


WHEN: Oct. 30, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

WHERE: Argonne Experimental Forest, WIS.

COST: $95, lunch included.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: Pre-approval has been requested for CEUs through SAF, Wisconsin DNR, and Wisconsin SFI. The workshop counts towards the Forest Management for Wildlife Certificate program.

The Power of Partnerships: Forestry Cost-Share Opportunities

As a professional forester, you may feel comfortable creating and communicating about forest management plans, but do you know how to help landowners determine which partnerships are best for them? In this virtual training, hear from a panel of experts as they walk through the who, what, when, where, why, and how of some common cost-share opportunities in Wisconsin. Come with your questions! Although information will be presented, this is also an opportunity to get the answers you’ve been seeking.


This panel discussion will be recorded. Registration is required to access the recorded session.

Prescribed Fire Workforce Development

A free webinar series on prescribed fire for forest management continues on Oct. 2 at 8:30 a.m. CT.


Join us for "Prescribed Fire Workforce Development" as we explore strategies to build up the workforce necessary for forest and fire management.


The webinar will be presented by Ron Waukau and Curtis Wayka from Menominee Tribal Enterprises and a representative from the U.S. Forest Service.


The webinar will be moderated by Hannah Spaul, Director of Land Management-Wisconsin, The Nature Conservancy.
