Hello, Friends and Supporters!
We have some exciting updates for you about this year’s Bow Wow Bash and our furry-
tastic new developments with Kitty City!
New Digs for the Bow Wow Bash!
Our event has grown by leaps and bounds, and we’re thrilled to announce a new
venue—Washington Township Park in Avon (lower level by the Splash Pad)! This
bigger, better location has loads of room for us to grow as the Bash gets even more
paw-some every year. Here’s a sneak peek at what’s in store at our new location:
- A bigger splash pad just for the pups—great for cooling off and splashing around!
- Big shelters and shady areas to keep everyone comfy and cool.
- A new area called “The Zoomies Zone” for more space for all the tail-wagging fun, furry activities we have planned!
We’re wagging our tails with excitement about this move and can’t wait to see you and
your four-legged friends there! So, mark your calendars for September 29th and get ready for
the best Bow Wow Bash yet—it's going to be a pawsitively barking good time!
Meow-velous News from Kitty City!
We’ve got some whisker-tingling news to share—Kitty City got its official occupancy
approval from the Town of Avon! We’ve been busy bees moving into our new cat-tastic
space and can’t wait to show it off to you! And don’t fur-get—we only have 3 kitty suites
available for sponsorship, and we have lifetime naming rights for several of our rooms.
It’s the purrfect way to leave your paw print in the world!
Thank you for being the cat's meow when it comes to support. With you by our side,
we’re making a pawsitive impact for all the animals in our community
With gratitude,
Board of Directors

Now that we have occupancy approval, exciting things are beginning to happen! Some of our Suite Sponsors have begun decorating their suites, and they are absolutely fabulous! We have also begun moving some of our cat/kitten supplies from the Administrative Building to Kitty City. It's a huge task, but we have amazing volunteers who are working tirelessly to get it done. Thank you to all of our supporters and volunteers who are putting in so much effort to get us closer to opening Kitty City!

Featured Foster
The Bernhardt family has been fostering for Misty Eyes since 2018. They have provided long-term foster care for Ox, a dog who came to Misty Eyes in 2019 from a hoarding situation and who, to this day, still does not trust humans. The family has also provided respite foster care from time-to-time, and Ox is a wonderful playmate for those dogs.
While they don't have a lot of spare time, because -- toddler -- they enjoy writing and playing music, projects and hiking. Their favorite part of fostering is seeing the happy faces of animals when they realize they're "home" and safe. Their one word for fostering is rewarding. Indeed, it is.
Thank you, Bernhardt family, for caring about homeless animals, for giving Ox a stable home in which he can relax, and for being there to help out your fellow foster families when needed!

Medical Update...
Penny, our little puppy mill girl, had her first TECA surgery on her left ear on September 5th and is recovering well. Her sutures will be removed on September 20th, and if all is well, the surgery for her right ear will be scheduled. Following recovery from that surgery, she will face spay surgery with possible repair of hernias in her abdomen. In the short time she's been with us, Penny has already begun to behave like the little lap-loving Yorkie she was meant to be. She enjoys sitting in the warm sun outside and lounging in her car seat on car rides. This little 7 lb. girl has been through a lot and has more to get through, and it would not be necessary if she'd had decent care in her 4 years of life. Puppy mills usually breed female dogs every heat cycle. Ideally, a dog should not be bred more than once a year, and should have no more than 4-6 litters in her lifetime. We don't know Penny's breeding history, but based on her condition, it was not a good history. If you would like to contribute to Penny's medical fund to help ensure that this sweet little dog can live the rest of her life free of pain, please use the link below to make a donation. We thank you, and Penny thanks you!

Sunshine
Sunshine is a gorgeous female adult kitty who was originally found as a stray. A wonderful person took Sunshine in and fostered her for Misty Eyes until she was adopted. Unfortunately, the adopter ran into some hard times and had to return Sunshine to us. She really likes people and willingly checks out visitors to her home. She is a girl who likes her personal space at times, and doesn't hesitate to let you know when she wants to be left alone. For that reason, she would do best in a home with older children who can understand her signals. She is not fond of other animals -- she wants all the love and attention for herself -- so will need to be an only fur kid. She has great house manners and can be a cuddle-cat when she's in the mood! If you'd like to meet Sunshine, please submit an adoption application online by clicking the button below.

Bonnie
This charming girl is Bonnie, a scruffy-coated terrier-mix who is as sweet as they come...and she has an adorable little stub tail that wiggles non-stop! Bonnie is yet another dog that Misty Eyes pulled from an overcrowded, high-kill shelter. She is friendly, playful, affectionate, and generally well-behaved. She is house-trained and crate-trained, but will need some help in being a little less exuberant in meeting people. She does well with other dogs once she feels comfortable with them, but can be a little "guardy" about high-value items, like her special person, a toy or yummy chewy. Bonnie was adopted, but was returned to Misty Eyes when a second dog in the home took a dislike to her. She will make a terrific companion for an active person who enjoys walking and/or hiking, although she needs additional work on her leash-walking skills. If you'd like to learn more about Bonnie, please submit an adoption application online by clicking the button below.

Pet Overpopulation Crisis
The ASPCA estimates that six to eight million dogs and cats enter the US shelter system each year, costing taxpayers $2 billion to capture, house, euthanize or dispose of unwanted animals.
- 2.7 million dogs and cats are euthanized annually; 31% of dogs and 41% of cats (USPCA)
Among the top reasons given for surrendering pets, according to HSUS, are “moving” and “landlord issues.” In reality, millions of pets suffer from irresponsible pet ownership: too old, unplanned litters, too much trouble, too expensive, unrealistic expectations.
Before surrendering a pet, try to find ways to make it work. Rehoming a pet should always be the last resort. Examine your schedules and commitments, and make adjustments where possible. Enlist the help of family members or friends to help, or hire a pet sitter to ensure your pet is receiving sufficient exercise and attention.
Dumping or abandoning a pet is never acceptable. If local shelters or rescues are unable to take the animal immediately, explore ways to temporarily house the pet until shelter space becomes available – ask friends/family to assist; utilize social media to seek a temporary “foster” home for the animal (but check references and home conditions). Some rescues may not have space to take your pet, but may be willing to “sponsor” your rehoming request.
Above all, please be a responsible pet owner and pass that knowledge on to your children. Volunteer at shelters and rescues, and/or foster animals needing homes. Someday, we will eliminate the pet overpopulation crisis, not by building more and more shelters, but by working together to care for the animals entrusted to us. They didn’t ask to be born into this crisis. Humans have put them there, and humans must save them.

Training Tails
LuAnn Keyton, KPA CTP
| |
This month’s Training Tails is truly about “tails.”
A wagging tail means my dog is happy, right?? Not necessarily!! A wagging tail can also signal fear, frustration, or other negative feelings. Don’t trust that wag!!
| |
Some breeds’ tails are naturally higher or curl over their backs, such as a Keeshond. However, for most dogs, a high held tail means high alert. A straight up tale can be positive or negative. For instance, when a dog sees a squirrel, they probably have this type of tail before they begin the chase. Or, the pup could have noticed another person or dog that has their attention, possibly in a negative manner.
| |
Most people know the meaning of this tail. The tucked tail means fear, anxiety, or even “something is wrong.” Please remove this pup from the current situation so they can become comfortable again.
| |
This straight-out rigid tail means tension. This dog is about to enter its fight or flight response. Calmly remove the dog from the situation before a fight erupts.
| |
And, finally, a relaxed or neutral tail. Different breeds have different relaxed tails. Check out your dog’s tail position when they are relaxed so you’ll be aware when they are nervous.
| |
Hopefully, this information will help you determine your dog’s or another dog’s emotional state when they are near each other. If you have any questions, please email LuAnn Keyton.
