Co-sponsored by the  Federation of Alliances Françaises USA

Apéro National French Conversation Group (en français) – Every Wednesday

The group is for high-intermediate to advanced (or fluent) speakers who are current members of an Alliance Française chapter in the U.S. (if you are not a current member of an Alliance chapter, visit the Chapter’s page and sign up for membership at one of your closest AF chapters) or AATF members. Native speakers are welcome. This group conversation is for adult participants, ages 17 and up.

Note that conversation groups are not substitutes for taking an official French class. Conversation groups are for informal practice and for sharing the joy of conversing in French with other like-minded Francophiles or Francophones.

The national group meets by Zoom for an hour every Wednesday, and meets to accommodate our after-work Apéro theme:

Every Wednesday @ 5:00 PT / 7:00 pm CT / 8:00 pm ET

The group is hosted by a member of the Federation of Alliances Françaises board – Linda Witt. Attendees will be assigned to breakout rooms of 4-5 people, with each breakout session lasting 14 minutes. The rooms are then are re-created (for a different mix each time). In this way, participants get to meet and chat with a variety of participants from different backgrounds, regions, and fluency levels.

Participants will need to use Zoom (a free videoconferencing service). To get on the invitation list for the “Apéro-National” sessions, click here.

Brilliant Exiles: American Women in Paris | French-American Histories

Thursday, September 19 · 6 - 7pm EDT

Villa Albertine Washington DC

For the upcoming French-American Histories, One Story, Two Narratives conversation, we will discuss this exhibition on American women in early 20th-century Paris, a time when they transcended societal constraints to redefine their identities. The talk will explore how these "brilliant exiles" made significant contributions to art, literature, dance, publishing, music, and fashion, shaping modernist movements from the heart of a cosmopolitan city. Delve into the freedoms they discovered, the transformative work they led, and reflect on the progress made since their pioneering journeys.

Miss Morgan's Book Brigade

Date: 26 Sep 2024, 3:00pm - 4:00pm GMT-5 Eastern Time

After presenting The Paris Library, Janet Skeslien Charles is thrilled to return to AF to discuss her latest novel Miss Morgan's Book Brigade. The book celebrates the little-known story of the 350 women who worked forty miles from the front in World War I France. Join us to discover the American Committee for Devastated France, called Le Comité américain pour les régions dévastées (CARD) in French. Founded by millionaire Anne Morgan and her long-time love Anne Murray Dike, this international group helped rebuild devastated French communities. When the German army attacked, the women of CARD evacuated thousands of civilians. They earned the Croix de Guerre (War Cross medal) for their courage under fire. CARD also brought something that the French had never seen—children’s libraries. After the war, librarian Jessie Carson turned ambulances into bookmobiles and trained the first French female librarians. The French called Anne Morgan "a generous and intrepid friend of France," and she was given the rank of commander in the Legion of Honor. In 2017, a stamp was issued in her honor by La Poste.
