From the Pastor
"We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now." --Romans 8:22
The Sundays after Pentecost are colloquially known as "the green season," pointing both to the liturgical color and summer growth and harvest right outside our walls.
Since 1989, the span from Sept. 1 to Oct. 4 has also been recognized as the "Season of Creation" by a broad coalition of churches, including the Lutheran World Federation, the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches, the Anglican Communion, and the World Council of Churches. This season invites Christians to reflect on God's good creation and our responsibilities toward it.
This year's theme is "To hope and act with creation." The challenges our Earth currently faces, from climate change to microplastics pollution to PFAS, can seem overwhelming and beyond solution. Hopelessness, as you already know, leads to apathy and inaction.
But we can lean into hope, because Christian hope is not pie-in-the-sky idealism but rooted in God's faithfulness. Christ's resurrection reminds us that new life is possible even when death seems like the only possible outcome. We believe that the Holy Spirit can lead us into radical change, beginning with our very selves. And that hope fuels concrete action and the possibility of reconciliation.
I invite you to explore these ideas further in conversation with me or others, and at https://seasonofcreation.org. How is God calling us to be and to do in this season of hope?
"For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God."
--Romans 8:19
In Christ,
Pastor Connie

Reconciling in Christ Statement
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:28
We welcome YOU to Bethesda and Immanuel to participate fully in our congregational life. You who may have experienced exclusion, injustice or racial inequity; You who are young, old, rich, poor; You of all abilities; You from all nations and ethnic backgrounds; You of all sexual orientations, gender identities or gender expression.
We are committed to racial equity, economic equity, gender equity, sexual equity. We are committed to learn, celebrate, advocate and welcome everyone through a series of forums and educational opportunities. May we grow in acceptance and become a voice for inclusion, equity and justice.
No matter where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

Bethesda cottage meetings
Calling all Bethesda members and friends! Sign-up sheets are now available for cottage meetings--a chance for fun and casual conversation around the mission of our church.
When ELCA Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton began her call, she suggested four emphases for congregations that I think we can all agree on: 1) we are church; 2) we are Lutheran; 3) we are church together; and 4) we are church for the sake of the world. Bethesda Lutheran has a strong history of embodying all four of these statements, and has attracted attention both from the community and from the synod for the way we live out being church for the sake of the world. You have every right to be proud of these accomplishments.
Still, we need to be listening for the places and tasks God is calling us to now. Where might Bethesda and its members be poised to make a difference to the Bayfield community and the world beyond, especially in light of available time, energy, and resources? What are the needs that you’ve observed? And what would bring your heart deep gladness?
Please sign up in the fellowship hall or email Nancy to attend one of the meetings:
Sep. 5 - Eicher's at 2:00 (tentative time)
Sep. 10 - Cox's at 7:00
Sep. 11 - Benzschawel's at 7:00
Sep. 12 - Lundberg's at 7:00

When Jim Pete was here in July, he made us aware of the Eagle's Nest, a hygiene and household supply pantry for local Lac Courte Oreille Ojibwe University students in need.
Some of the items needed include: laundry soap, dish soap, dryer sheets, hand wipes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, baby things including diapers, feminine hygiene products, lotion, travel size shampoo & toiletries, pain relievers (Tylenol, Advil, etc.), kids' cough syrup.
When you're shopping in the weeks ahead, see if a few of these items could wind up in your cart to help support this effort. Items can be dropped off at church (look for the hamper in the Fellowship Hall) or at the Cabin in Red Cliff.
