September: What's New

Preschool Ushers in a New Year of Learning

Encompass welcomed new and returning preschool families earlier this month. Our staff has been working hard to prepare for an incredible year of learning, friendship, and growth.

The Early Learning program's purpose statement is “To create a community where every child feels safe, supported, and ready to learn—offering trauma-responsive early learning that nurtures the whole child, empowers families, and fosters lifelong growth and well-being”.

This purpose if fulfilled through a focus on four core areas of the classroom – social-emotional learning, pre-academics, process over product, and play-based learning.

Social-emotional learning (SEL) refers to the learning opportunities created in our classroom for children to practice and develop their SELf-regulation skills. We do this by integrating trauma-informed and equity-centered practices.

Pre-academics are seen in the classroom through learning opportunities where children engage in activities that support and develop their skills, such as pre-math, pre-writing, and pre-reading.

Process over product can be observed through learning opportunities for children to develop their creativity and express their individuality, focusing on the experience rather than the result.

All of these are met through play-based activities that nurture children’s imagination and curiosity about themselves and the world around them.

Here's to a great year of learning and growth with our students!

Limited Preschool Spots Available

Though school has started, it's not too late to enroll your child. We have limited spots in our North Bend classroom.

Offered for children ages 2.5-5 years, our Early Learning programs employ an evidence-based curriculum that uses play to foster kindergarten-readiness skills in gross motor, fine motor, problem-solving, logical thinking, symbolic thinking, listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Building Confidence for Back-to-School Worries

Our Pediatric Therapy team recently tried something new to help elementary-aged kids navigate back-to-school apprehension. Responding to the mix of emotions about navigating structured routines, peer interactions, new teachers, and more, they offered Confidence Camp: Back-to-School Edition. Encompass Pediatric Therapy Director Megan Walsh shares how this interactive group therapy adventure made a big impact on kids.

ParentChild+ Open Enrollment

Offered in English and Spanish, ParentChild+ is a national program with proven outcomes. By engaging in activities that foster vocabulary and pre-literacy skills and social-emotional development, ParentChild+ graduates are 50 percent more likely to be prepared for kindergarten than their socio-economic peers, and have a 30 percent higher graduation rate.

Now Enrolling!

As students graduate from the program, space opens for new participants. The Encompass ParentChild+ program serves families living within the boundaries of the Snoqualmie Valley, Riverview, and Issaquah School Districts. Children must be between 16 months and 30 months old at the time of enrollment. The program is offered in both English and Spanish, and eligibility is determined by income, age, and other factors.

Wrapping Up Summer Outreach Season

We had so much fun meeting kids and families at farmers' markets and community festivals this summer. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to play and say hi. Special thank you to the many volunteers who helped us at our booth, bounce houses, along parade routes, and with games and activities in the Kids' Field of Fun. We can't do these events without you!

That's a wrap on summer outreach, but we'll be back for some fun community Halloween events in October. Stay tuned!

King County Candidate Forum

The King County Alliance for Human Services is hosting a virtual Candidate Forum on Thursday, September 25. Moderated by Encompass Board Member Tavish Maclean, this forum provides an opportunity to engage directly with the individuals running for King County Executive and King County Council (Districts 3, 5, 7, and 9). King County is a significant funder of human services across the county; these positions are pivotal to the future of our sector's stability.

Why This Matters: This forum is a key space for community members—especially providers and stakeholders in human services—to engage with candidates on issues such as housing, accessibility, social services, and equity. Community participation and voice help ensure these topics remain central in the upcoming election season.

The forum will be held on Thursday, September 25, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Learn more and register using the link below.

The need is growing. Sustained financial support ensures we can be there for every child who needs us. A recurring gift—whether it’s $25 a month or $250 a quarter—helps Encompass provide life-changing programs and resources all year long.
