2025 AMO Conference

In August, I attended the 2025 Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) conference in Ottawa with fellow Councillors and City staff. Our delegation attended meetings with government officials including cabinet ministers, opposition party leaders, Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs), and industry stakeholders to discuss and advocate for Mississauga’s priorities. At the conference, Mississauga’s delegation advocated for support for the City’s top priorities, including:

1.   Fixing the Peel Regional Police funding formula at the Region of Peel to ensure fairness for Mississauga taxpayers by saving more than $93 million in annual subsidies to Brampton.

2.   Advocating for a new financial deal for Mississauga, similar to those signed with Toronto and Ottawa, to fund transit operating costs and capital projects.

3.   Advancing priority transit projects

4.   Pushing more infrastructure funding to combat flooding and manage stormwater

5.   Working with the province to respond to American tariffs and protect local jobs.

We successfully delivered our priority messages and are looking forward to seeing the positive outcomes of our discussions at AMO.

Hospice Mississauga Bed Race

I'm excited to share that I’m participating in this year’s Hospice Mississauga Bed Race on October 8, 2025, and I would love your support! This Fall, I'll be joining other teams in a fun and spirited race, pushing decorated beds down the track—all to raise vital funds for Hospice Mississauga.

This amazing organization provides compassionate care, comfort, and support to individuals and families living with a life-limiting illness, at no cost to them. Hospice care makes a profound difference during some of life’s most difficult moments. If you’re able to support, you can visit my webpage. Thanks for your support!

New Sanitary Sewer Installation

Peel Region will be installing new sanitary sewers in our community within the next year. This map shows the area of the installation on Mississauga Road and Queen Street, Britannia Road West, and Erin Centre Boulevard between Mississauga Road and Erin Mills Parkway.

Sanitary sewers are underground pipes that carry wastewater from your home or business to a water resource recovery facility. As our population grows, we need to build larger sewers to provide you with high-quality wastewater services. Construction will take place in the municipal right-of-way and within easements. Temporary closures will be required along the Culham Trail within Timothy Street Park during the construction period. Staff are currently in the planning stages so specific timelines will be provided when available. Visit Peel’s website for more info.

Louis Velianou Park Renaming

I am pleased to report that I brought forward a Motion to Council on September 10, 2025, to request the renaming of Horseshoe Park, located at 7150 Saint Barbara Blvd, in honour of long-time Mississauga resident, Mr. Louis (Elias) Velianou, who sadly passed away on August 23, 2025.

Mr. Velianou was a Mississauga business leader and successful restaurateur for over 50 years, co-founding the iconic restaurant, The Orchard, in 1966. He was a devoted and dedicated community volunteer, who was deeply committed to local causes, freely and generously giving of his time and resources to support numerous initiatives, and a pillar of the Greek community in Mississauga, who was instrumental in helping to establish and organize the community. He received the prestigious Ontario Bicentennial Award for Volunteers in 1984.

City staff recommended the naming of Horseshoe Park based on the connection to Hackney horse breeding at this location, which has been commemorated by the City with the installation of special interpretive signage onsite at this park. This park is located in an area of significance to the Greek community in Mississauga, as it is adjacent to the lands where St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church was located and is being rebuilt and where the local streets are named in honour and recognition of the local church and Greek community. The renaming will be officially discussed at Heritage Advisory Committee on November 4, 2025 and public consultation will be posted on yoursay.mississauga.ca.

The Parking Foundation

Founded in memory of Stephen Louis Bilak, who spent 66 days in the ICU. During that time, his family paid over $1,000 in parking fees — a burden no family should face while caring for a loved one. For families already carrying the weight of illness, these hidden costs make a hard journey even harder. The Parking Foundation eases the cost of hospital parking by providing complimentary parking passes to:

     families with children battling cancer

     patients undergoing treatment

families supporting loved ones in hospital

For more info, contact Rose Bilak at rose.bilak@gmail.com or (416) 889-7673.

Protect Yourself from Phone Scams

Peel Regional Police is warning the public to remain vigilant, following reports of fraudulent phone calls, largely targeting members of the Asian community. Members of the public are reportedly receiving phone calls that appear to come from the Peel Police non-emergency line (905-453-3311).

·        The caller claims to be a police officer or member of the Peel Regional Police.

·        The caller references personal information about the victim to establish trust and extract further sensitive information, including banking details.

·        The caller claims you are a suspect, threatens arrest and makes demands for payment.

·        If you receive a suspicious call, hang up right away.

·        Never share your personal information or send any money.

·        If you have provided information on banking details, contact your credit agency, Transunion Canada/ or Equifax, and have your accounts monitored.

·        If you believe you have given money to a fraudster, call your local police.

If you are uncertain whether the person you are speaking with is a police officer, you may ask for their name, badge number, and/or relevant occurrence/report number they are investigating. You can contact the non-emergency line by calling 905-453-3311 to verify the information.
