It was wonderful to see so many of you at the INPEC Conference and our 50th Anniversary Gala last week. These gatherings reminded me how much we have to celebrate as a community. At the same time, I feel compelled to turn our attention to a more sobering topic.
On the morning of August 27, a tragic school shooting occurred at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, MN. It is easy to think this kind of violence only happens in public schools, but sadly, several shootings have taken place in non-public schools in recent years. I reached out to my counterpart in Minnesota to extend prayers and condolences. Our conversation made the loss even more painful, as I learned that their state organization has long sought—without success—to extend school safety funding to non-public schools.
This made me especially grateful for Indiana’s commitment to protecting all students, regardless of the type of school they attend. Through the Indiana Secured School Safety Grant, non-public schools here have been able to fund important safety projects and initiatives. Although this year’s application window has closed, INPEA is happy to advise schools that may want to apply in the future.
In addition, schools and churches are eligible for the Indiana Nonprofit Security Grant Program. This competitive program provides federal funding for physical security enhancements and other safety-related activities to nonprofit organizations. It is an excellent option for church-affiliated schools, since grant dollars may be used for security measures at both the school and the church.
Finally, please remember that no grant or piece of equipment can replace the power of relationships. The most important safety measure remains knowing your students and families well. Our teachers, counselors, and staff excel at building those personal connections that make our communities strong and safe. Please know of my ongoing prayers for your schools, your staff, and most importantly, your students.
