Kindness 101: Reciprocity

In the series Kindness 101, Steve Hartman and his kids share stories built around kindness and character, and the people who have mastered those qualities. In this clip, the lesson is on reciprocity. Steve reconnects with a Harvard graduate who wanted to not only recognize support staff at his university, but also celebrate them.

Adopting a Philosophy of Continuous Improvement

I wanted to share our re-accreditation journey at Charlotte County Public Works. To paint the entire picture, I feel compelled to briefly detail our original accreditation. We had really been struggling with getting the accreditation off the ground. I mean, really struggling—to the point of needing extension after extension. The APWA team was very patient with us, but finally had to have the tough conversation about moving this forward.

We developed a newer, more aggressive strategy and, equally important, assigned a single point of contact to ensure deadlines were met. When the time finally came for our review, COVID-19 was in full swing, and we conducted our site visit remotely. For me, the process was nerve-racking as I was relatively new to my position. Suffice it to say, we were successful and were so proud that we came out of the process with nine model practices.

"Positive Intelligence" by Shirzad Chamine- Book Reviewed by TLP Cohort #10 Member

Positive Intelligence explores how our minds can work both for and against us, introducing the Positive Intelligence Quotient (PQ) as a way to measure how often we operate from positive strengths versus negative patterns. Chamine identifies “saboteurs” that hold us back and “sages” that help us lead with clarity, empathy, and resilience.

book cover of positive intelligence by shirzad chamine shows a black silhouette with a white plus sign on the head surrounded by blue bubbles with plus and minus signs subtitle says why only 20 percent of teams and individuals achieve their true potential

What makes this book especially valuable for TLP participants is its focus on building mental fitness through daily practice—not quick fixes. Leaders learn how to recognize their own saboteurs, strengthen their sage powers, and apply these lessons to real-world challenges. By doing so, they not only enhance their own leadership but also contribute to stronger teams and healthier workplace cultures. The book emphasizes that real change comes from consistent practice—building “mental muscles” to shift habits and perspectives over time. By understanding and balancing saboteurs and sages, leaders can improve team performance, strengthen workplace culture, and foster more positive results. A valuable read for anyone seeking lasting growth.

I highly recommend this book for anyone in public works leadership. Positive Intelligence offers practical strategies and lasting insights to support professional growth and team success.
