President's Message

Remember school in the fall?

When you were a kid, summer was nice, but it eventually grew a little boring. Then fall arrived. A fresh start and a chance to begin again.

That feeling is what fall at ALL is all about. Starting over. Starting together.

It’s the excitement of new classes with people we know, and people we don’t. It’s entering again into a project of learning new skills, new facts, new areas of interests. It’s engaging in stimulating conversations on a wide range of topics.

No quizzes. No tests. No papers. No exams. Just discovery.

We aren’t doing it to advance to the next grade, earn a diploma or launch a career. We’re doing it to embrace learning for its own sake and to seek new intellectual discoveries, just because we can.

We like delving in depth, through multi-week courses led by peer coordinators who are just like us. And administrated by a community of volunteers who are just like us. Perhaps you will consider becoming a coordinator or joining a committee. Or both.

We are a community of men and women with experiences and stories to share and new ideas and perspectives to offer. We share history. And we are vital. Still evolving. Still changing. We want to be engaged. We want to be involved. We want to be … more.

See you around the campus.

Roger Shoemaker

ALL President

We would like to thank our wonderful coordinators for offering us such a rich, interesting and diverse array of courses for the fall 2025 semester and extend a warm welcome to all the new coordinators to our program.

The Curriculum Committee is always looking for new and exciting courses and for new members who may have a skill, an expertise, interest or hobby they would like to share with us. We are particularly looking for conversational language courses that our membership is always eager to take. September Special Event

"Cutting the Cord"

September 29th 3:30 p.m. - Lorusso Atrium

On Monday September 29, at 3:30 p.m. in the Atrium, Sarah Canning will make a presentation entitled "Cutting the Cord."

If you're thinking about canceling your cable service, this class is for you

Cutting the cord is a great way to save money, but it can be hard to know where to start. This presentation will walk you through the process of cutting the cord, from choosing an alternative to canceling your cable service. The average cable and internet bill in America is $250 per month. Many are paying over $300! Average savings from cutting the cord: $1200 per year.

Sarah Canning founded her company "Gadgets Made Eazy" in 2018 after graduating from CCCC with two degrees in technology. Her business offers technology tutoring for virtually any gadget you own, from computers to smart doorbells, to Alexa-type devices. They also offer comprehensive repair services for all Windows and Apple devices. She has presented at many senior centers in the area.

Check your emails for reminders later this month.

Learning a New Language in Costa Rica

In July, ALL Vice President Brian Haendiges spent two weeks in full-immersion Spanish classes in Costa Rica while living with a local family.

The atmosphere reminded him so much of the enthusiasm for learning that permeates ALL that he thought he’d share a bit about what it was like.

Inspired: Collages of True Influencers

Cynthia Jayne

While building a career in nonprofit work, Cynthia has always made room for art in her life. With a background in interior and graphic design, Cynthia has been creating small art projects for her home and gifts for loved ones for many years.

This collection of collages celebrates people she deeply admires—figures who've shown incredible courage in fighting for peace and justice. Among others, you will see Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Alexei Navalny, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and the Dalai Lama, all united by their willingness to choose courage over comfort to leave a positive impact on our world.

Central to this collection is a tribute to her mother, a writer and artist whose creativity has always inspired Cynthia. Growing up surrounded by her mother's art shaped how she sees the world and fuels her own creative expression.

These collages are Cynthia's way of honoring both the people who've moved her and the artistic spirit her mother passed down to her. The collection reflects her belief in the power of individuals to create change, one courageous act at a time.

"Collage is like painting with paper"

Helen Duggan Aucoin

My name is Helen Duggan Aucoin. I started noticing art after my son passed away. Donny had a brain tumor at the age of 37 and he had to leave us in 2007. This was a life changing event. I remember thinking at one point “how will I move forward without him” and right there and then vowed to be the best I can be while here on earth. Grief led me.

I created a small business and called it Pillows for Comfort. Which led me to the ET Wright building in Rockland, Mass. A building filled with the most talented and friendly artists. You know the saying “When in Rome ...”? I started “painting” by throwing paint on fabric and making purses. But something was pulling me, something deep inside and wanted to be seen.

And then Marion Carlson came into my life. Marion was offering collage classes to a small group of women in the building. I joined the class. A life changing event. I had no idea what I was doing. All I knew was I felt ecstatic going through magazines and cutting pictures like a little girl in kindergarten. Collage for me was a life changing event.

The day my teacher said “collage is like painting with paper” I knew this is something I could manage. I can cut paper from magazines, newspaper, even fabric. Saving little tiny pieces of paper sometimes for years. I could move everything around until my innnerself suggest I stop. I love color, another component of a process that I feel is talking to me in a language I never understood. Oh and let’s not forget the glue. Finding the right glue. The one that will not leave wrinkles. If you would like to know more about my work, you can call the ALL office for my contact information. I know this is something I am meant to do. A life changing event.

Little by little, year after year, I found myself living a fulfilling life. Art is guiding me. Showing me who I have become. The work you see on the walls are my beginning pieces. The Dorchester Crowd is the one on the far left. My very first piece is of the man with the tattoos.

I would like to introduce my three granddaughters, Mary-Kate, Madeline and Caeli, and a daughter-in-law I adore. We all grew up together. They are thriving greatly and making such a beautiful impact in the world.

In recent years, I have read A Course in Miracles. I am studying Buddhism, and plan on taking art classes until the end.

Working With the Cape Media Center

The ALL Communications Committee has been busy this summer!

We have increased our presence on radio, e-print media and television, along with our Facebook site, our website and, of course, our newsletter.

We have been promoting ALL and our fall semester on Cape Cod radio stations as well as the Cape Cod Times and other Cape Cod publications.

We are also increasing our partnership with The Cape Media Center. Please watch local cable station Channel 26 for our new "Working Together" testimonial about how our partnership has helped us increase our membership.

As always, the Board of Directors and all the Committees are working to bring a meaningful educational and social experience to the over-50-year-old population of Cape Cod.
