The first day of school has passed, the parking lot at the train station is beginning to fill again with commuters and the offices at the Municipal Building are back to their normal hours. I hope that everyone was able to visit Senasqua Park for a summer concert, take a swim at Silver Lake and enjoy the other great activities that Croton offers each summer. There are many more planned for the fall, so please be sure to check our website and social media pages frequently!
On August 20, the Village Board of Trustees issued a special permit for the colocation of a wireless facility at the Municipal Building to New Cingular Wireless (which does business as AT&T Wireless). When this facility is completed in the next few months, AT&T customers can look forward to improved service in the area around the Municipal Building, including the Upper Village. The Village will also be receiving lease payments from the company, which continues our efforts to seek out new revenue streams to keep any required property tax increase to a minimum.
The Village will once again be undertaking a street resurfacing program this fall. Streets scheduled to be paved are Scenic Drive West, Lower North Highland Place, Cleveland Drive (from Benedict Blvd. to Piney Point Ave.) and Penfield Ave. (from Oneida Ave. to Benedict Blvd.). The paving project along the remainder of Cleveland Drive, which will also include portions of Old Post Road South, Gerstein Street, and Wood Road, has been postponed until the spring. Further information will be shared as the schedule is finalized with the Village’s contractor.
Updates on various projects and initiatives ongoing in the Village:

NYSDOT Roadwork: The work along Albany Post Road and Riverside Avenue is nearing its conclusion. All milling and paving work has been completed. Crews are continuing to work on the road gutters along Albany Post Road for the next few weeks.

Con Edison: Con Edison will be completing their gas main re-lining project on Cleveland Drive between Whelan Avenue and Benedict Blvd in the next few days. The re-lining project on Batten Road is expected to continue into October.

Complete Streets Grant: The Village Board will be holding a public hearing on September 10 at 7:30 PM to receive comments on two projects being submitted to Westchester County under the Complete Streets grant program. The projects involve the creation of a sidewalk on the north side of Municipal Place between Maple Street and South Riverside Ave., and a sidewalk on the east side of South Riverside Avenue between Maple Street and Municipal Place. If awarded, the county will cover up to 50% of the project cost.

Dobbs Park Upgrades: The Village is currently out to bid on two separate projects for Dobbs Park. One involves the replacement of the playground equipment and basketball court at the park, while the other involves the replacement of the infield and outfield at the ballfield. Also being done in conjunction with these projects is the replacement of the fencing and backstop at the field. It is expected that work will begin later this fall and be completed in time for the spring season.

Tri-Municipal 9/11 Memorial Ceremony
Join us for the annual Tri-Municipal 9/11 Memorial Ceremony on Thursday, September 11, 2025, at 4 PM at the 9/11 Remembrance Memorial at Croton Landing as we honor and remember all the lives lost on this tragic day. All residents are encouraged to join in honoring and remembering the lives lost on this somber day.
For convenience, a shuttle van will be available to transport attendees to the memorial site. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held at the Harmon Firehouse, located at 30 Wayne Street, Croton-on-Hudson.
Reaching Through the Shadow, a memorial dedicated to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, stands as a symbol of remembrance and resilience along the Hudson River at Croton Landing. Learn more about this memorial on the Village's Memorials and Monuments page.

A Timely Addition to the Village
The Village celebrated the dedication of the new gateway clock with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Maple Commons Park attended by Maple Commons tenants, Village officials and representatives from Regan Development Corp. The clock is an electric time piece and keeps time through the use of satellite technology.
Thank you to those who generously contributed to fund this streetscape improvement, including Regan Development Corp. and Clean Path New York. Special thanks is also afforded to Village resident Steven Krisky, who spearheaded the project from its inception. The clock is a wonderful addition to our gateway district, and will soon become a landmark for those entering our Village from Route 9/9A.

Traffic Alert: The Blaze
The annual Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor will run from September 12, 2025, until November 16, 2025. Expect heavier traffic around the Village, especially near Croton Point Avenue and South Riverside Avenue. Police officers will be on scene helping to direct traffic. Please allow extra time and use alternate routes when possible.

Kaplan’s Pond Aeration Project Town Hall

Join us for a public town hall to discuss the proposed Kaplan’s Pond aeration project. This is an opportunity for community members to share feedback with the Village Board. Representatives from Lake Savers LLC and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Westchester will also be present to answer questions at the conclusion of the public portion of the meeting.

The Department of Public Works continues to make improvements, including at the Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building. Recent work focused on the parking lot, where crews excavated damaged areas of the curb, established a new sub-base, and installed new asphalt curbing along with asphalt repairs.
Also, crews recently completed improvements along Lower North Highland Place. The work included removing damaged sidewalks and curbing, widening the roadway by three feet, and installing new concrete curbing and sidewalks. An ADA-compliant ramp was also added to improve accessibility.

DPW Works to Control the Spotted Lanternfly
As part of their maintenance work at Croton Landing and along the river walkway this summer, our DPW removed the invasive Tree of Heaven.
The Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive insect pest from Asia that primarily feeds on trees of heaven (Alianthus altissima) but is also known to feed on a wide variety of plants such as grapevine, hops, maple, walnut, and fruit trees. The insect will negatively impact NYS agricultural industries as well as impact impact New York's forests.

Drum Circle at Senasqua Park

The Croton Arts & Humanities Advisory Council is hosting a Drum Circle at Senasqua Park, led by Alex Dyer of the Bennett Conservatory of Music. All Croton residents are invited to attend. No drumming experience necessary, just bring your enthusiasm and join the community for an evening of music by the Hudson River. If you have a drum, bring it along; if not, the Bennett Conservatory will provide loaner instruments. The rain date for this event is Thursday, September 18, 2025.

Hudson River Day

Celebrate the history, ecology, and beauty of the Hudson River with a day of hands-on activities, exhibits, and family fun! Take a scenic sail on the Hudson with free rides aboard the “Whimbrel,” a 22-foot sloop-rigged Catboat operated by Ferry Sloops. Young anglers can participate in a fishing clinic and contest, with all equipment and bait provided free of charge. Prizes will be awarded, and adult supervision is required. Enjoy toy sailboat and fossil making, seining demonstrations, and marine life viewing tanks. Explore local art displays and vendors, and grab a bite to eat which includes the best fish chowder on the Hudson. Rain date is Sunday, September 7, 2025. Free admission.

Visit the Croton Lions annual fundraising tag sale to support the Croton Lions Scholarship Fund and provide aid to seniors and the disabled. Donations accepted include household items, clothing (new only), tools, toys, games and sporting goods. No books or furniture. If you have anything to donate, you can drop it off at 40 Grand Street starting Sept. 14.
